Key FPL injuries and bans for Gameweek 29

For FPL managers the availability of their players, both in terms of FPL injuries and bans, is an important part of their Gameweek preparations. Knowing which players are available is key to FPL success, we take a run through of the player circumstances ahead of the deadline.

With five matches still to be played in Double Gameweek 28, we round up the FPL injuries and bans as a result of Gameweek 28 so far.

FPL INJURIES

Players to monitor ahead of Gameweek 29

Arsenal

Emile Smith-Rowe (Arsenal) Illness Missed the match against Watford on 6/3 after testing positive for Covid.

Takehiro (Arsenal)Calf injury Missed the matches against Wolves and Watford after injuring his calf.

Aston Villa

Lucas Digne (Aston Villa)Illness Missed the match against Southampton on 5/3 due to illness.

Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa)Illness Missed the match against Southampton on 5/3 due to illness

Brentford

Kristoffer Ajer (Brentford)Knock Taken off with an injury in the match against Norwich on 5/3 but his manager wasn’t sure what the issue was.

Christian Norgaard (Brentford)Muscle injury Taken off as a precaution after feeling muscle tightness against Norwich on 5/3

Burnley

Charlie Taylor (Burnley)Foot injury It was revealed on 17/1 that he picked up a knock on his foot that would require a scan. Has been sidelined since.

Ben Mee (Burnley) Knee injury Suffered a knock to his knee in the match against Leicester on 1/3 and was eventually substituted despite initially continuing. Was “touch and go” for the Chelsea game on 5/3 and missed out.

Dale Stephens (Burnley)Muscle injury His manager revealed on 28/2 that the player had a “slight strain” and he has been sidelined since. Could be back in training in the week beginning 7/3.

Chelsea

Ceasar Azpilicueta (Chelsea) Knock Picked up a knock in the League Cup Final and was substituted.

Marcus Alonso (Chelsea) Illness Missed the match against Burnley on 5/3 due to illness.

Crystal Palace

Joel Ward (Crystal Palace)Groin Injury Missed the match against Chelsea on 19/2 after picking up a groin injury. Expected back around the 14/3.

Everton

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton) – Groin Injury Missed the Man City match on 26/2 with a groin injury that will keep him out for 7-10 days.

Leeds

Tyler Roberts (Leeds)Hamstring injury Suffered a hamstring strain shortly after coming on as a substitute on 5/3. A doubt for the Aston Villa game on 10/3. 

Leicester

Wesley Fofana (Leicester)Lack of match fitness Back in training after recovering from a leg injury sustained in August. His manager said on 23/2 that he would be given “a few weeks training with the squad” before being considered for a playing return

James Justin (Leicester)Muscle injury Substituted with what looked to be a muscular injury on 13/2.

James Maddison (Leicester) Back injury Missed the Leeds game on 5/3 with a back injury but will “hopefully” be back thereafter.

Liverpool

Joel Matip (Liverpool)Illness Will miss the West Ham game on 5/3 because of illness.

Roberto Firmino (Liverpool)Muscle injury Missed the Norwich game on 19/2 with a muscle problem and has been sidelined since. Will miss the West Ham game on 5/3 but will resume full training the day after.

Thiago Alcantara (Liverpool)Hamstring injury Missed the EFL Cup final on 27/2 because of a hamstring injury and has been sidelined since. Ruled out of the West Ham game on 5/3 but should return thereafter.

Man United

Luke Shaw (Man United)Illness Missed the match against Man City on 6/3 after testing positive for Covid.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Man United)Hip injury Missed the Man City game on 6/3 with a hip injury.

Edinson Cavani (Man United) Groin Injury Missed the match against Man City on 6/3 with a knock.

Raphael Varane (Man United)Illness Missed the match against Man City on 6/3 after testing positive for Covid.

Newcastle

Matt Richie (Newcastle) Knee injury Was assessed for a “knee problem” ahead of the Leeds game on 22/1 and missed out. His manager said on 7/2 that he would be out “longer term”. Expected back in training in the week beginning 7/3.

Southampton

Nathan Tella (Southampton)Groin Injury Missed the Man City game on 22/1 with a groin injury and has been sidelined since. Expected back in training in the week beginning 14/2 but had a minor setback and he will now need an extra week of recovery.

Shane Long (Southampton)Knock Taken off with a knock in the FA Cup tie against West Ham on 2/3. Was assessed before the league fixture against Aston Villa on 5/3 but missed out.

Mohammed Salisu (Southampton)Hamstring injury Missed the FA Cup tie against West Ham on 2/3 with a hamstring issue. Was assessed before the league fixture against Aston Villa on 5/3 but missed out.

Spurs

Oliver Skipp (Spurs)Groin Injury Ruled out of the FA Cup tie against Brighton on 5/2 with a groin injury.

Watford

Ismaila Sarr (Watford)Knock Needed treatment at the end of the match against Manchester United. His manager hopes the issue isn’t too serious

Josh King (Watford)Hamstring injury Missed the Arsenal game on 6/3 with a hamstring injury, which was described as precautionary by the club.

West Ham

Declan Rice (West Ham)Illness Missed the Liverpool game on 5/3 through illness but his manager is hopeful of a swift recovery

Potential FPL options with longer term FPL injuries and bans

Aston Villa

Marvelous Nakamba (Aston Villa)Knee injury Substituted in the game against Liverpool on 11/2 with a knee injury. Has since undergone surgery and will be out for 12-16 weeks.

Brentford

Ajer Kristoffer (Brentford) – Hamstring injury Missed the defeat to Burnley on 30/10 with a hamstring injury. His manager subsequently ruled him out for up to two months.

Brighton

Jeremy Sarmiento (Brighton) Hamstring injury Substituted with a hamstring injury in the match against West Ham on 1/12. Expected out for between three to four months.

Adam Webster (Brighton) Groin Injury Missed the Burnley fixture on 19/2 with a groin issue. It had been hoped that he would return for the following game against Aston Villa on 26/2 but he subsequently had a setback. Could be out until after the March international break. 

Burnley

Gudmundsson (Burnley) Illness Ruled out for “weeks” on 3/2 after it was revealed he had surgery following appendicitis.

Matej Vydra (Burnley)Hernia Ruled out for “weeks” on 3/2 after undergoing hernia surgery. Progressing well and working on the grass but remains sidelined as of 3/3.

Erik Pieters (Burnley)Knee injury Taken off in the match against Crystal Palace on 26/2 after taking a knock to his knee and has been sidelined since. Weeks away from a return as of 3/3.

Chelsea

Ben Chilwell (Chelsea) Knee injury Substituted in the Champions League win over Juventus on 23/11 with a partial injury to his ACL. Initially ruled out for six weeks on 26/11 but it later transpired that he would require surgery and miss the rest of 2021/22.

Crystal Palace

Nathan Ferguson (Crystal Palace)Hamstring injury Ruled out of the Norwich game on 9/2 with a supposedly minor injury. A hamstring issue was since confirmed and he faces an absence of between five and six weeks.

Everton

Abdoulaye Doucoure (Everton) Everton confirmed on 19/10 Doucoure has suffered a foot injury and will be assessed to determine the period of absence.

Ben Godfrey (Everton)Hamstring injury

Yerry Mina (Everton)Thigh injury Sustained a thigh injury in the match against Newcastle on 8/2. Ruled out for 8-10 weeks.

Leicester

Timothy Castange (Leicester) Thigh injury Missed the FA Cup match against Watford on 8/1 after suffering a thigh injury. Has since undergone surgery and is ruled out for 8-9 weeks.

Jamie Vardy (Leicester)Muscle injury “A bit sore” after appearing to pick up an injury in the match against Liverpool on 28/12.

Johnny Evans (Leicester)Hamstring injury Hamstring injury Sustained a hamstring injury in the match against Newcastle on 12/12 and has been sidelined since. Underwent surgery and was ruled out until April on 7/1. About six weeks away from a return as of 4/2

Leeds

Kalvin Phillips (Leeds) – Hamstring injury Substituted in the match against Brentford on 5/12 with a hamstring injury and has been sidelined since. Ruled out until March on 31/12 but that recovery date has since been put back. Getting “closer and closer” to a return to training as of 3/3.

Liam Cooper (Leeds)Hamstring injury Substituted in the match against Brentford on 5/12 with a hamstring injury and has been sidelined since. Ruled out until early March on 31/12 but that recovery date has since been put back. Getting “closer and closer” to a return to training as of 3/3.

Patrick Bamford (Leeds)Foot injury It was reported on 20/1 that he had picked up a foot injury. Ruled out of the Newcastle game on 22/1 and has been sidelined since. Will “probably” be back before the end of the season.

Liverpool

Roberto Firmino (Liverpool)Muscle injury Missed the Norwich game on 19/2 with a muscle problem and has been sidelined since.

Man City

Reuben Dias (Man City)Hamstring injury Ruled out for 4-6 weeks with a hamstring injury picked up in the FA Cup tie against Peterborough on 1/3.

Newcastle

Matt Ritchie (Newcastle)Knee injury Was assessed for a “knee problem” ahead of the Leeds game on 22/1 and missed out. His manager said on 7/2 that he would be out “longer term”.

Callum Wilson (Newcastle)Muscle injury Substituted with a muscle injury in the match against Man Utd on 27/12. His manager thinks the issue might be serious.

Kieran Trippier (Newcastle)Foot injury Substituted with a foot injury against Aston Villa on 13/2. A scan revealed a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot and he has undergone surgery. Aiming to return before the end of the season.

Norwich

Tim Krul (Norwich)Shoulder injury Sustained a shoulder problem in the match against Everton on 15/1 and has been sidelined since. Doing some ball work as of 18/2 but still “a few weeks away”.

Watford

Ismailia Sarr (Watford) Hamstring injury Needed treatment at the end of the match against Manchester United on 26/2. Ruled out of the Arsenal game on 6/3 and “for the foreseeable future” with a hamstring strain.

West Ham

Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham) – Knee injury Taken off against Liverpool on 7/11 after needing stitches to an eye wound but his manager also revealed after full-time that he had taken a knock. A scan later revealed that he had suffered an ACL injury..

Vlad Coufal (West Ham) Hernia Missed the Newcastle game on 19/2 after experiencing problems with a hernia. It was confirmed on 24/2 that he had undergone groin surgery and was set for a “few weeks” out.

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham) Achilles injury Taken off with a suspected Achilles injury against Liverpool on 5/3. His manager is unsure of the severity of the issue but was concerned that the player couldn’t put weight on his heel.

Wolves

Nelson Semado (Wolves)Muscle injury Muscle injury Limped off in the Arsenal game on 24/2 with an apparent muscle issue and has been missing since. Ruled out for at least one month on 4/3
