MLS Fantasy top picks for Round 20

With the new set of MLS fixtures approaching we take a look at the top picks for Round 20. Twitter is full of some of the best fantasy managers in the world so we bring in expert @dmpwright to reel off some of the best options for the big round ahead.

Looking at the top picks for Round 20 can be extremely useful to MLS Fantasy managers. Focusing on some of the best assets for the new week could help with some of the most important decisions in the game like transfers and captaincy.

Round 20

After a week of respite, we’re back to another double gameweek in Round 20. It’s a quick turnaround, with games kicking off on Tuesday night US time! Colorado and LA Galaxy both play twice at home while Charlotte, Columbus, DC United, Dallas, Miami, LAFC, NYCFC, Orlando and Toronto all have one home and one away game.

Top targets – Facundo Torres, Orlando City – Midfielder, $10.4m

Orlando City’s playoff push is in no small part down to Facundo Torres. The mercurial Uruguayan is amongst the top 10 midfielders for xG + xA (0.47) and key passes (2.24) per game. He also comes into Round 20 in red-hot form, having scored five goals in his last four starts and recorded three double-digit hauls in that time. With Orlando facing Toronto at home in the first game of their double Gameweek, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up Torres.

Riqui Puig, LA Galaxy – Midfielder, $9.1m

Riqui Puig set MLS on fire in the second half of last season. He catapulted LA Galaxy into playoff contention following his arrival from Barcelona. While he hasn’t lived up to his own high standards so far this season – thanks in no small part to the Galaxy’s woeful form and quixotic front office – Puig’s numbers are still decent (including an xG + xA per game of 0.33).

With two home games in Round 20, the shot-happy Spaniard should do well. Gastón Brugman is a solid alternative to Puig should you prefer a different flavour of the LA Galaxy midfield.

Cucho Hernández, Columbus Crew – Forward, $11.8m

While those around him seemingly falter (yes, I’m looking at you Lucas Zelarayán), Cucho Hernández continues to go from strength to strength in Columbus yellow. The Colombian forward has only once failed to score or assist since Round 10 (!), recording five goals and eight assists in that time.

Hernández continues to lead the league in shots per game (5.27). He also places third overall for shots on target per game (1.80), making him a shoo-in for Round 20.

Differential – Douglas Costa, LA Galaxy – Forward, $7.7m

Douglas Costa has really stepped up his game since Chicharito’s season-ending knee injury against Real Salt Lake. The Brazilian’s time in Tinseltown has been mostly characterised by ill discipline and indifferent performances. However, Costa has thrived in his new deep-lying role and has amassed four assists and nine bonus points in his last three starts, recording 27 Fantasy points in that time. If he starts El Tráfico, Costa could be worth throwing on your bench.
