MLS Fantasy top picks for Round 17

With the new set of MLS fixtures approaching we take a look at the top picks for Round 17. Twitter is full of some of the best fantasy managers in the world so we bring in expert @dmpwright to reel off some of the best options for the big round ahead.

Looking at the top picks for Round 17 can be extremely useful to MLS Fantasy managers. Focusing on some of the best assets for the new week could help with some of the most important decisions in the game like transfers and captaincy.

Round 17

Another week, another (mini-) double gameweek in MLS Fantasy. This time for LAFC only. Elsewhere, only 12 other teams feature in Round 17 which will also be affected by international callups ,so make sure you plan accordingly!

Top targets – Ryan Hollingshead, LAFC – Defender, $7.1m

Results wise, LAFC did not live up to expectations in Round 16 with a 4-0 drubbing away to Houston Dynamo on Saturday followed a lacklustre 0-0 draw at home to Atlanta United last Wednesday. Nevertheless, several of their players recorded respectable Fantasy scores and I wouldn’t hesitate to triple up on LAFC again this week.

In defence, Ryan Hollingshead is one of the most likely to start both games with Diego Palacios away on international duty and Sergi Palencia reportedly still out with injury at the time of writing. The fullback offers decent offensive potential and comes into Round 17 off the back of a 10-point return in Round 16.

Carles Gil, New England Revolution – Midfielder, $12.0m

Carles Gil’s Fantasy credentials have been called into question on more than one occasion over the last 12 months. His performances this term have hopefully dispelled those doubts for good. The Spanish playmaker has six goals and seven assists this season.

Gil’s points include three double-digit hauls in this last six league games, and has recorded a league-high 3.15 key passes per game. Despite New England only playing once, I would strongly consider giving Gil the armband this round.

Hany Mukhtar, Nashville SC – Midfielder, $14.2m

Away from home, Hany Mukhtar continues to alternate outstanding and indifferent Fantasy performances. At GEODIS Park, however, where Nashville welcome St Louis City on Saturday, the reigning MLS MVP should be considered nothing short of a lock.

In his last five home fixtures, Mukhtar has scored five goals and assisted four times, resulting in Fantasy scores of 9, 11, 21, 7 and 14. Don’t overthink this one; stick Mukhtar in your starting XI and forget about him.

Differential – Bobby Wood, New England Revolution – Forward, $7.5m

Bobby Wood is pulling up trees for New England right now (I’ll see myself out). The Hawaii-born forward has recorded four goals and one assist in his last seven starts. He also currently boasts the seventh highest xG per game (0.49) in MLS.

Given that New England’s opponents in Round 17, Orlando City, are seventh worst for shots against (15.43) and xGA (1.71) per game away from home, Wood could be worth a punt this week.
