Community Team Reveal Gameweek 1 – Marc Jobling

Each Gameweek brings an FPL community team reveal. As a result, that person gives insight into their transfers, captaincy and future plans.

Ahead of Gameweek 1, it’s the turn of Marc Jobling to tell us what is happening to his team.

Hi Marc and thanks for the team reveal. So how did last season go?

I was disappointed with a 76k finish, to be honest. Most of my final ranks end up between 50k and 100k but I was at 20k after Gameweek 12 and around 64k at Gameweek 29 when entering chip territory.

The usual end-of-season rise didn’t happen and, fairly jaded, I was fairly sure I’d enter FPL retirement. Yet here we are all over again!

What does your defence look like?

For all the inevitable late panics that will come later today, I’m fairly secure on my preferred defence. Ben Chilwell is preferred to Trent Alexander-Arnold due to his ability to get inside the box, whilst Gabriel and Pervis Estupinan have never really been in doubt.

We seemingly have the luxury of having several playing £4.0m defenders so I’ll risk having two of them, knowing the extra half-million saved from having a £4.5m could do wonders elsewhere.

Meanwhile, what about your midfield and attack?

I’m starting to overthink and it’s all based around Liverpool v Bournemouth in Gameweek 2. Although at peace with being Salah-less, I’d like an alternative Reds attacker out of Diogo Jota or Luis Diaz. Yet we don’t know which one will start, do we? So it’s risky.

I’d have been settled on the standard collection of Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Gabriel Martinelli and Bryan Mbeumo but suddenly Joao Pedro has high ownership. Going without either him or Kaoru Mitoma for Brighton v Luton isn’t good, so I may opt for Mitoma over Gabriel Martinelli.

Obviously Erling Haaland was locked in from day one. And I like Ollie Watkins’ fixtures, although he could be the fall guy should I stumble upon a magical idea.

So what are your transfer plans for Gameweek 2 and beyond?

It’s not advised to pre-book transfers. However, with many starting players having a brilliant Gameweek 3 fixture, I think it’s OK to not save up free transfers in this case.

Perhaps this structure allows me to buy a non-Salah Liverpool midfielder next week and then Richarlison afterwards. The Spurs situation is very much wait-and-see. Hopefully the defence can hold out for a while.

Finally, what about captaincy?

Any debate over owning or captaining an all-time expensive Haaland was quashed once the fixtures came out. Man City’s run is so good that not captaining the Norwegian phenomenon is not an option for me.

Good luck and thank you for the team reveal!
