Who are the best FPL defenders for Double Gameweek 28?

Six sides play twice in Double Gameweek 28. Therefore, it’s time to assess who the best FPL defensive options should be.

Double Gameweek 28

Below are the 13 fixtures. Aston Villa, Leeds, Newcastle, Southampton, Watford and Wolves all play twice.

Double Gameweek Defenders

Firstly, let’s rule out Leeds options. They have conceded a stunning 20 goals from their last five matches – the most a side has ever shipped in a single Premier League month.

On the other hand, Wolves have one of the league’s strongest defences and FPL managers will relish the prospect of a pair of home games against Crystal Palace and Watford. A phenomenal run of six clean sheets from eight matches between Gameweeks 12 and 21 has been followed by a slightly leakier run but Jose Sa, Conor Coady and Max Kilman remain near-essential assets.

The recent defensive form of Southampton and Newcastle continued at the weekend as both grabbed a clean sheet. A 12-game run of the Saints conceding goals has turned into back-to-back shut outs, thrusting Tino Livramento, Jan Bednarek and Kyle Walker-Peters onto the FPL radar. Three clean sheets from five matches has suddenly made the Magpies’ defensive watertight, boosting the appeal of Dan Burn and Martin Dubravka.

Additionally, Lucas Digne kept a Gameweek 27 clean sheet for Aston Villa. Many managers were frustrated by Ben Foster not conceding at Old Trafford, stuck firmly on 1.38 million benches. Without a clean sheet until Roy Hodgson’s arrival halfway through Gameweek 23, they’ve now kept three from six outings. As he is the back-up goalkeeper for so many, managers may as well field Foster for this double.

Single Gameweek Defenders

The vast ownership of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joao Cancelo won’t be deterred by just playing once, against West Ham and Man United respectively. Meanwhile, there is still a chance that online rumours of a Chelsea postponement moving to Gameweek 28 come true. Surely this would boost the ownership of Antonio Rudiger and Reece James.

Should the opponent be Arsenal, rather than Norwich, the Gunners will also play twice – with the first half against Watford. Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White and Kieran Tierney will be hot property.
