Underlying stat dominators
Here we take a look at underlying stat dominators from last season. This could give us a good indication of who could perform well in the new 2022/23 season.
When starting to consider which players to own at the start of the new season previous years underlying stats can be really useful. Here you can check out all the underlying stats for all players last season. These are some of the players who dominate the underlying stats during the 2021/22 season.
Bukayo Saka
Saka had a fantastic season for Arsenal and that showed in the 11 goals and seven assists the Englishman created. Not just that but Saka was also Arsenals highest points scorer in FPL with 179 points, 33 points ahead of second place Gabriel.
Arsenal start the season with only one tough fixture according to the season ticker. Due to premium defenders, the excitement around wingbacks and premiums like Haaland and Salah Saka could be easily become unaffordable. Its worth noting that last season Saka was:
- Fifth from all midfielders for chances created with 53, one behind team mate Odegaard.
- With from all midfielders for big chances created, only premium priced players like Son and Salah managed more.
- Fifth for NPxGI (None penalty expected goal involvement) amongst midfielders.
Saka has the fixtures, form and underlying stats to have another great season.
Aymeric Laporte
Man City have undoubtedly one of the best if not the best defence in the league. For that reason Man City will always be high on FPL managers lists for defenders.
With that most managers are drawn to the more obvious pick in Cancelo and rightly so. However at a cheaper price we think people could miss out on a lot of points from Laporte this season by not selecting him.
Last season Laporte was:
- The sixth highest scoring defender with 160 points, missing 5 games last season.
- Eighth amongst defenders for goal attempts with 25.
- Seventh for goal attempts inside the box amongst defenders.
- First for big chances total ahead of any other defenders.
With 15 clean sheets and four attacking returns last season resulting in 19 returns overall out of the 33 matches, we think Laporte could go even bigger in the new 22/23 season.
Ivan Toney
The forwards in general did not have a great season in terms of FPL but Toney did stand out as one of the most impressive and we will see that in the underlying stats. The focal point of the attack and being the penalty taker means he already has the potential to do well in any given season.
With 12 goals and five assists Toney returned a solid 139 points last season but it should have been more. Last season amongst forwards Toney was:
- First for chances created with 39, four more above Harry Kane.
- Second for big chances created with 10.
- Second for NPxGI
- Third for goal attempts only behind Ronaldo and Kane with 77.
Toney put up some fantastic underlying stats last season and we think he could go even bigger in the new season. With only one tough fixture using the season ticker in their first 10 matches Toney could do well.
Matty Cash
Aston Villa had a pretty underwhelming season under new manager Steven Gerrard but there were some players that stood out. One of those players was Matty Cash.
With four goals and three assists Cash managed to finish the season as Aston Villas highest scoring points players with 147 points in FPL. Amongst defenders he was:
- Second for opponent penalty area touches with 74 just behind Cancelo.
- Sixth for goal attempts with 31.
- Joint third with Cancelo for shots inside the box (22).
With a transitioning Aston Villa team Cash could go from strength to strength both defensively with clean sheets and offensively with goals and assists.
