The best captain in Gameweek 13

We try and find the best captain in Gameweek 13. With the help of the Fantasy Football Scout members area we can use the season ticker and underlying stats to find the best captaincy option for the Gameweek ahead.

Captaincy is one of the most important decisions a manager can make. Writing up a shortlist of options can be helpful. Picking out the best however, can be even more important for FPL managers.

Fixture ticker

Below you can see teams near the top with the easier fixtures, going all the way down the table to teams with the tougher fixtures. The season ticker can be very helpful. However, won’t always give us the full story on which players make the best captaincy options.

The options – Jarrod Bowen

West Ham rank first on the fixture ticker this week. Although West Ham, amongst all teams in the league, rank close to the bottom for goals scored and big chances total, they still rank in the top seven teams for attempts on goal and attempts in the box. The face Bournemouth in Gameweek 13. Amongst all teams, Bournemouth rank the fifth worst for shots in the box conceded and the third worst for total attempts conceded.

Midfielder Jarrod Bowen (£8.2m) had a poor start to the season, but could that be changing? In the last three matches, Bowen has picked up returns in two of them. One of those returns includes a 14-point haul. In the last six Gameweeks, amongst all players, Bowen ranks third for attempts on goal (15) and joint second for attempts in the box (13).

Mohamed Salah

Liverpool rank second on the fixture ticker this week. The Reds have had a questionable start to the Premier League season. However, amongst all teams they still rank fourth for goals scored, third for attempts on goal, second for attempts in the box, and third for big chances total. They play Nottingham Forest in Gameweek 13. Amongst all teams Nottingham Forest are the second worst for goals conceded, second worst for shots in the box conceded, the worst for total attempts on goal conceded and the worst for shots on target conceded.

Midfielder Salah (£12.8m) has both slumped in price and in form since the start of the season. However, at the time of writing, in all competitions, in the last two matches he has scored four goals. The Egyptian ranks second in the league amongst all players for chances created (26). Furthermore, the penalty taker also ranks joint second for big chances total in the last four Gameweeks. We could also see the Liverpool man play a more central role. This could be seen as a huge factor in his improving form.

Erling Haaland

Amongst all teams in the league, Man City rank first for goals scored, first for big chances scored, first for attempts on goal, first for attempts in the box and first for big chances total. They play Brighton Gameweek 13. Brighton rank amongst the top 10 teams in the league for most defensive stats. This means they could be less of a target then teams with much worst stats, like the ones mentioned above.

Striker Erling Haaland (£12.1m) continues to be both the most owned and highest returning player in FPL. The forward has blanked just once this season with returns in nine out of 10 of his matches. Amongst all players, Haaland ranks first for goals scored, first for goals scored in the box, first for attempts on goal, first for shots in the box and first for big chances total.

Conclusion

All three players could be fantastic options for the captaincy this week. However, it could be a difficult decision between Haaland and Salah. The Liverpool man does play against the worst defensive side in the league and gets the additional point for a goal scored and clean sheet kept. Haaland faces a team that could be seen as one of the best defensive units in the league, but both his team and individual offensive stats are superior.

It may be a tight call this week. If you wanted to play it safe it could be a case of selecting Haaland. But, if looking to climb the ranks quicker, then Salah could be a better option.
