MLS Fantasy top picks for Round 21

With the new set of MLS fixtures approaching we take a look at the top picks for Round 21. Twitter is full of some of the best fantasy managers in the world. Because of that we bring in expert @dmpwright to reel off some of the best options for the big round ahead.

Looking at the top picks for Round 21 can be extremely useful to MLS Fantasy managers. Focusing on some of the best assets for the new week could help with some of the most important decisions in the game like transfers and captaincy.

Round 21

Guess what? Round 21 is another sizeable Double Gameweek. It is also the final DGW before MLS goes on hiatus for a month to accommodate the Leagues Cup. The teams to target this week include the Chicago Fire, New England Revolution and Vancouver Whitecaps, all of which have two home games.

Top targets – Carles Gil, New England Revolution – Midfielder, $12.9m

Not much needs to be said here. Carles Gil continues to post elite numbers in MLS (he sits fifth for xG+xA [0.59] and top for key passes [3.11] per game among midfielders). He also comes into this week off the back of a rest (due to yellow card accumulation) in Round 20. He should be the first name in your team for Round 21. Gil is also my pick for captain.

Ryan Gauld, Vancouver Whitecaps – Midfielder, $11.2m

Like the other MLS sides that participated in the CONCACAF Champions League, Vancouver struggled with the additional demands of continental action at the start of the season – and Ryan Gauld was no exception.

The Scotsman’s Fantasy output has increased considerably since the Whitecaps exited the competition especially at home where Gauld has scored at least six points per game since Round 8, including three double-digit hauls. With stats comparable to some of the league’s best players (xG+xA and key passes per game of 0.54 and 2.52, respectively), I wouldn’t hesitate to lock Gauld into your line-up for Round 21.

Alan Pulido, Sporting Kansas City – Forward, $9.4m

Ride that hot hand! He may not have the easiest double gameweek schedule (at home vs Real Salt Lake and away to Austin FC) but with Sporting Kansas City looking like they’ve finally turned a corner, Alan Pulido is hard to overlook for Round 21.

The Mexican striker was at the centre of transfer speculation barely a month ago. He looked to be on his way out of Kansas, but has since scored an incredible nine goals in seven games to become the MLS MVP for June. Just watch his availability though, as he was a late substitute against Houston on Saturday night.

Differential – Fabian Herbers, Chicago Fire – Forward, $5.1m

Fabian Herbers is listed as a forward in MLS Fantasy. However, he typically picks up an advanced midfield position for the Fire. This is is good for his bonus point production. He’s on an impressive run of recent form, having scored seven, eight, five and nine points in his last four games, including an eye-catching three goals in that time.

He’s not nailed on to play 180 minutes in Round 21. But if you’re looking for a value wildcard pick, Herbers could be your man.
