Is Neal Maupay a good option for FPL Double Gameweek 25?

FPL Double Gameweek 25 has made FPL managers look for new players that they can add to their squads to maximise points returns. Could Brighton’s Neal Maupay be the pick of the forwards?

For all the current talk on mid-priced forward options that have emerged of late, Neal Maupay barely gets mentioned.

Current Form

Both Odsonne Edouard and Ivan Toney have found some recent form. Ollie Watkins plays for a reinvigorated Aston Villa and Wout Weghorst has impressed since arriving at Burnley ahead of their many games in hand. But it is Maupay who outscored all of them.

Maupay is having his best season yet on the south coast. His seven goals are already close to the eight and ten of previous campaigns, with three assists joint-best with 2019/20. Seasonal points-per-90 figures dropped from 4.27 to 3.77 but he is currently on 4.77.

Rotation Risk?

In Gameweek 25, Brighton are one of two sides to play twice and Maupay will be confident of ending his five-match barren spell by netting against Watford (a) and Man United (a). His record against the Hornets is good, with two goals from three meetings that only totalled 104 minutes.

However, some managers worry that Maupay is a rotation risk. His recent benching against Chelsea was enough to cast doubt about his security of starts. Maupay has been in the matchday squad 21 times and has started 17 of them. Over the two previous seasons he has started 59 times from 72 squad appearances.

Maupay does have competition from the likes of Danny Welbeck has scored twice during their last five matches – albeit off the bench – and is pushing for a start.

Leandro Trossard is set to return from Covid 19 with manager Graham Potter hopeful he will be available for the game against Watford. Trossard has been known to occasionally play up front, however more often than not plays alongside Maupay.

Good option?

With many Free Hits and Wildcards activate ahead of Double Gameweek 25 is Neal Maupay a good option for the next few Gameweeks?

Maupay is currently top across the Brighton squad for expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI.) He has returned 7 goals from his 37 goal attempts.

In FPL Double Gameweek 25 Brighton and Maupay face a Watford side who have one of the worst defensive records in the league and Manchester United who have kept just one clean sheet in their last seven Premier League fixtures.

Meaning Maupay could make good differential for Double Gameweek 25. This is especially true for managers looking for a player for Gameweek 25 who will then be swapped for a different Double Gameweek forward ahead of Gameweek 26.
