The international break is often a good time to stop and reflect on the season so far. We caught up with FPLFamily Sam for her thoughts on the season so far and her plans for the coming weeks.

What type of manager are you?

Generally I like to play my own game. I’m not one for playing it safe and really enjoy picking out and investing in differentials. When I’m building my teams I will look at the heavily own assets and own, usually, four of the most heavily owned six and then play form and fixtures as well as differentials for the rest of the squad.

How has your season gone so far?

It’s been good. I had my best ever Gameweek 1 with 95 points, which lead to a rank of 15,602. I now sit at 122,518 having dropped to 883,992 in Gameweek 5. I played my Wildcard in Gameweek 8 and that seems to have propelled my season back in the right direction.

What have been your best decisions of the season so far?

James Maddison from the start was a great decision. His creativity has made him a points magnet in FPL this season and that’s be great. I also went for Saliba over Gabriel and that tight call has lead to me being significantly better off. This campaign Saliba has returned 55 points with Gabriel on 29 for the season.

What about the worst decisions?

The two that immediately spring to mind are benching Diaby in Gameweek 7 for his eight points and then benching Tsimikas’ 15 points in Gameweek 12. Both of those sets of points would have been great rank boosts.

Alongside that starting the season with the Man United double up of Onana and Fernandes backfired. I also held them both for too long before selling.

What is your rank goal?

As always the aim this year will be to finish in the top 10k. Last season after being at 1.2m by the World Cup I clawed it back to finish 20,137. I was delighted to finish so high after a difficult season, but I am always aiming for that top 10k finish.

What are your plans for the upcoming gameweeks?

I really like my team at the moment. There are some nice picks in there as well as some that potentially I might look to move on. I am trebled up on Aston Villa at the moment so will likely sell Matty Cash ahead of Gameweek 13 and then I will probably move on either Ollie Watkins or Diaby ahead of Gameweek 14.

I am also considering selling Son Heung-min after the Aston Villa game. Spurs’ lacked creativety against Wolves in Gameweek 12. If we see a repeat of that against Villa in Gameweek 13 then the Spurs midfielder will likely find himself sold in favour of Cole Palmer or an Arsenal midfielder.
