The Options – Erling Haaland
Manchester City look to be back in great form after their loss to Arsenal. Since then the league holders have won five of their six matches. They play at home this week which is hugely significant. Last season at home Manchester City ranked as the best in the league for goals, the best for big chances total and second best for expected goals. This season overall they also sit top for both goals scored and shots on target.
Liverpool lay ahead for Manchester City. The Reds are in a good run of form – winning six of their last 10 matches in all competitions. In terms of their defence away from home last season they ranked mid-table for goals conceded, mid-table for expected goals conceded and the third worst team for big chances conceded. When taking all of the ‘big six’ teams into account this season Liverpool also sit second from bottom for big chances conceded.
Liverpool could be a team to target away from home, especially when their opposition are Manchester City. One player who could take advantage is Erling Haaland (£14m) who has been in top form recently. In fact in his last six league matches he’s managed a huge nine goals and two assists. In terms of underlying data he ranks above every other player for non-penalty expected goals, non-penalty expected goal involvement, shots in the box and big chances total.
Mohamed Salah
Liverpool are another team in top form this season – winning four of their last six matches in all competitions. The Reds play away from home this week. Last season when on their travels they ranked third best for expected goals scored, fifth for actual goals scored, second best for total attempts on goal, first for shots in the box and third best for big chances total. This season Liverpool sit joint third best for goals and shots on target.
Next up for the Reds is Manchester City away from home. Manchester City are also in a good period of form as we can see above. Defensively, when playing at home last season Manchester City ranked the best for expected goals conceded, the best for shots in the box conceded, the best for shots on target conceded and the best for big chances conceded. This season overall the holders sit second best for expected goals conceded, second best for shots on target conceded and third best for big chances conceded.
The standout in the Liverpool frontline is Mohamed Salah (£13m). The Egyptian has notched up seven goals in his last six league matches. When comparing his attacking data he ranks second for expected goals, second for non-penalty expected goal involvement, fifth for shots in the box and joint second for big chances total.
Who is the best captain for Gameweek 13?
The tough fixtures this week means there is a serious lack of convincing captaincy options. Because of this backing the best players in the game in terms of output and data makes sense.
Although Mohamed Salah is an excellent option, even against Manchester City, the Egyptian’ data isn’t as good as Erling Haaland’. We also have to factor in home and away. Manchester City have proven to be a better team at home and Liverpool a poorer team away from home. Both factors contribute towards Haaland being the best captaincy option for Gameweek 13.
Differential Captaincy picks
For those looking to go a little different with the captaincy armband this week then there are some other great options. So, lets take a look at some here:
- Dominic Solanke (£6.4m) – Bournemouth face Sheffield United this week a team who sit as the worst defence in the league according to the stats. Leading the Bournemouth frontline is Solanke. The Englishman ranks second best amongst all forwards for touches in the opponents box which is promising. He also bagged a brace in his most recent match against Newcastle and takes his sides penalties.
- Son Heung-min (£9.7m) – Tottenham have a meeting against Aston Villa at home this week who are significantly worse when travelling away. They have also failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last seven matches in all competitions. Leading the attack and likely to be taking penalties is Son. The South Korean has already picked up four double-digit hauls this season.
