Underachievers GW38: Which players are due an FPL goal?

Using recent underlying stats from the Fantasy Football Scout, we assess which players are due an FPL goal.

Recent FPL goals

Some forwards are in great form over their last four matches:

5 GOALS – Gabriel Jesus

4 GOALS – Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Jamie Vardy

3 GOALS – Jarrod Bowen, Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku, James Maddison, Raheem Sterling

However, others are shooting and getting in the right places without having either luck or end product.

So let’s look at the players who have recorded at least nine shots, an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.00 and an expected goal involvement (xGI) of 1.20 over their last four matches, yet no more than one goal.

Due an FPL goal

By scoring twice during Double Gameweek 37, Richarlison justified his heavy FPL backing and removed himself from underachievement.

Also from last week’s selection, Danny Welbeck proved he was indeed due a goal by netting for the second time in four matches. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored on Thursday night but remains on the below list.

A nice run of six goals from five games has been followed by a five-match fruitless streak for Ivan Toney. But his 14 attempts, 12 shots inside the box and 36 penalty area touches lead the way here, suggesting he can certainly score against a poor Leeds defence.

Last week’s stats are unadjusted for six players, none of which participated. Bruno Fernandes‘ team had a Blank Gameweek, with Liverpool choosing to rest Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane. Plus the injuries to Juraj Kucka, Jay Rodriguez and Timo Werner.

Even if Jurgen Klopp chooses not to risk Mohamed Salah on Sunday, there is still starting XI competition for Diaz, Mane and Diogo Jota. Mane has good Gameweek 38 history against Wolves and Jota has played most during their last three outings. Whoever starts will surely feel confident about scoring, it’s just a matter of guessing Klopp’s thoughts.

Meanwhile, if you don’t trust Spurs to complete their simple task, perhaps Teemu Pukki is a strong shout up front.

Also intriguing is Alexis Mac Allister. Whilst Brighton team mates Welbeck and Leandro Trossard have eye-catching recent form, the Argentine has the highest xG and xGI on this list. Yet only one attacking return since Gameweek 22.
