Mason Mount moves to Manchester United
Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign England midfielder Mason Mount from Chelsea on a five-year contract for £55m, plus £5m in add-ons.
Mason Mount and Chelsea
Mount joined Chelsea in 2005 and stayed there until he was promoted to the senior team at 18-years-old. His loan deals really helped him to shine.
In 2017 Mount joined Dutch side Vitesse on loan where he played in a central midfield position. The heatmap below shots Mounts seasonal positioning at Vitesse.
We can see that although Mount played as a central midfielder, he still advanced into some great attacking areas. We can also see that he helped out with corners, giving him an additional route to goal contributions.
Mount became integral to Vitesse whilst there and that can be seen in his output – he managed to accumulate nine goals and eight assists from 29 matches.
Mount then experienced life in England’ second tier joining Derby County on a season-long loan. Here Mount played a central midfield role but also featured in an attacking capacity behind the striker. He finished his loan with eight goals and four assists.
The 19/20 season was where Mason Mount made his first team debut. Once again, he played most of his minutes in a central midfield role. As well as central midfield Mount also featured in an attacking role. That season he played 37 Premier League matches scoring seven goals and creating five assists.
Mount came into the 20/21 season with huge confidence – that campaign he captained the Blues for the first time, became Chelsea’ youngest ever player to score in the group stages of the Champions League and provided the assist to crown his club Champions of Europe.
The 21/22 season came and it was this campaign that Mount would be trialled more heavily in an attacking role – he played most of his football on the left or right of a front three and ending up bagging 11 goals and 10 assists in 32 league matches.
Mount’ final season for Chelsea
With a changeover in owner and managers Mount failed to secure both form and his usual high level of game time. He started just 24 league matches for the Blues, predominately in a central midfield position with some spouts in attack.
It was a tough season for Mount as he clashed with the owners over a new contract but his form wasn’t helping his cause – he scored just three goals and created two assists in what was his worst campaign in terms of output for a long time.
What are Mounts strengths?

How does Mason Mount fit in to Manchester United?
Manchester United fan and content creator @FPLfrasier has below produced a fantastic thread. It details how the Reds could utilise Mount and in which roles. He also comments on how he may affect the offensive line.
Mason Mount’ Manchester United debut
Mount made his first appearance since joining Manchester United against relegated side Leeds. He played in a number 8 role within a 4-2-3-1 system. Although withdrawn at half-time Mount played a key role in some of their best attacking moments.
Will Mount be an FPL asset?
The central midfield position has never been an exciting one for FPL managers which could dampen the appeal for Mount as an asset. He has shown very capable when utilised in a more advance attacking role but the chances of him being used in that position seems low.
Mount could take set pieces and find himself involved in some of Manchester United’s attacks but at £7m in FPL, managers will expect more. In summary, Mount could be worth monitoring early in the season but may be a player to avoid at the beginning of the campaign.
