Top three defenders for Gameweek 38
Gameweek 38 is the final Gameweek of the 2021/22 season. This is therefore the final opportunity for FPL managers to secure their mini leagues and best possible Overall Rank. We assess the top three defenders for Gameweek 38.
The final fixtures of the Premier League season have a lot riding on them. Who wins the league, who finishes in the top four, who gets relegated and where FPL managers finish.
Gameweek 38 can often be a week where managers give squad players minutes. Therefore picking the right options is key for a successful Gameweek.
1. Ryan Sessegnon
Since the injury to teammate Sergio Reguilon, Ryan Sessegnon has started all of the possible matches for Spurs. Sessegnon has returned in four of his last five matches for Spurs in the Premier League. In this time he has registered 27 FPL points, no defender has returned more.
Sessegnon’s back to back clean sheets in Gameweeks 36 and 37 will put him high on the desirable list for FPL managers. Especially as the wingback returned two bonus points as well as the clean sheet in Gameweek 37.
In the same period Sessegnon has created eight chances for his teammates, only three defenders have created more.
Sessegnon and Spurs play Norwich in Gameweek 38 knowing that they will need to win if they are going to try and achieve a top four finish. Norwich have scored just once in their last five Premier League matches which suggests good clean sheet potential.
2. Antonio Rudiger
Gameweek 38 will be Rudiger’s last match for Chelsea ahead of a move away from the club this summer.
Rudiger is Chelsea’s highest scoring defender so far this season with 140 points, only Mason Mount has more across the Chelsea team. His 47 goal attempts is also more than any other Chelsea defender and is only bettered by Mount and Havertz in the Chelsea team.
Chelsea face Watford at home on the final day of the season. Watford has scored just once in the last three matches and have both Josh King and Emmanuel Dennis flagged in the game. Watford have also conceded 20 goals since Gameweek 31 which bodes well for Rudigers attacking threat in the final game of the season at Stamford Bridge.
3. Joao Cancelo
Man City dropped points in Gameweek 37 which leaves them needing to win their final game of the season against Aston Villa.
Joao Cancelo’s 12 attacking returns this season is top amongst the Man City defenders. Indeed he has had more goal attempts than any other City player.
Gameweek 38 opponents Aston Villa have conceded their most chances from the left, this bodes well for Cancelo’s attacking threat from the right of the City defence.
Man City have also conceded the fewest goal attempts in the league so far this season which bodes well for Cancelo’s clean sheet potential.
