The best captain in Gameweek 14

We try and find the best captain in Gameweek 14. With the help of the Fantasy Football Scout members area we can use the season ticker and underlying stats to find the best captaincy option for the Gameweek ahead.

Captaincy is one of the most important decisions a manager can make. Writing up a shortlist of options can be helpful. Picking out the best however, can be even more important for FPL managers.

Fixture ticker

Below you can see teams near the top with the easier fixtures, going all the way down the table to teams with the tougher fixtures. The season ticker can be very helpful. However, won’t always give us the full story on which players make the best captaincy options.

The options – Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal rank first on the fixture ticker this week. Amongst all teams in the league this season, Arsenal rank second for goals, second for big chances scored, and fourth for attempts on goal. They face Nottingham Forest in the round ahead. The newly promoted team rank the second worst for shots in the box conceded, joint worst for attempts on target conceded and the third worst for big chances conceded. This could indicate Nottingham Forest as a team to target.

Striker Gabriel Jesus (£8m) is now owned by 59% of the game base. The Brazilian has banked returns in six of his 11 matches. Those returns include one double-digit haul of 19 points. Amongst all players in the league, he ranks fourth for attempts on goal, fourth for shots in the box and third for big chances total.

Gabriel Jesus could be a great captaincy option. However, his latest FPL output and his opponents’ recent defensive improvements should be factored in.

Harry Kane

Tottenham rank second on the fixture ticker this week. Amongst all teams in the league, they are third for goals scored, joint fourth for attempts on goal and fourth for attempts in the box. Tottenham play Bournemouth in Gameweek 14. Amongst all teams in the league Bournemouth are the worst for goals conceded, the fourth worst for shots in the box conceded, the fourth worst for shots on target conceded and the second worst for headed attempts conceded.

Striker Harry Kane (£11.5m) has been relentless this season. The forward has picked up returns in 10 of his first 12 matches. Those returns include two double-digit returns. Amongst all players in the league, he is second for goals scored, joint second for attempts on goal and joint second for big chances total.

Harry Kane has shown huge FPL consistency. He takes penalties which also gives him another route to points. His team’s recent lack of goals should also be considered.

Mohamed Salah

Liverpool have shown inconsistencies this season. Those inconsistencies have also led to a lack of goals. However, amongst all teams in the league they still rank first for attempts on goal, first for attempts in the box and second for big chances total. They face Leeds in Gameweek 14. Leeds are the joint second worst for clean sheets kept and joint second for big chances conceded.

Midfielder Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) has struggled to regain his old form this season. So far, the Egyptian has picked up returns in five of his first 11 matches. Those returns consist of two double-digit hauls. Amongst all players in the league, he is third for attempts on goal, fifth for shots in the box and fifth for big chances total.

Salah could be a great option for the captaincy this week. Not only does he take his teams penalties, but his offensive stats are improving. The Egyptian’s recent Champions league form should also be considered. Salah has picked up four goals and one assist in his last two UCL matches.

Erling Haaland

Man City remain one of the best attacking teams in the league. In fact, they are first for goals scored, second for attempts on goal, second for attempts in the box and first for big chances total. Man City face Leicester in Gameweek 14. Amongst all teams in the league, Leicester rank the second worst for goals conceded, the fifth worst for shots on target conceded and the fourth worst for big chances conceded.

Forward Erling Haaland (£12.2m) has become the most reliable player in FPL this season. The striker is the most owned and highest scoring player in the game. Amongst all players in the league, he ranks first for goals scored, first for attempts on goal, first for shots in the box and first for big chances total.

Haaland is a doubt for the match ahead according to the Official FPL site. Monitoring his injury update will be vital. Haaland takes his teams penalties which also gives him another route to FPL points.

Conclusion

Arsenal man Gabriel Jesus could be considered. However, he does not take penalties, has a dipping FPL output and a defensively improving opponent in Gameweek 14. This could mean we rule Jesus out. Harry Kane’s relentless FPL form and the fact he takes his teams penalties does make for a strong case, but his team have lacked in recent performances. This could be enough to keep the captaincy off Kane.

Salah plays in a statistically improving attacking whilst his numbers are also on the rise as of late in the Champions League. The Egyptians penalty taking is another factor to back him, but his team’s recent scoring output is a concern.

If fit, Man City striker Haaland is the standout captaincy option. Not only does his team have some of the best attacking stats in the league, but he also himself dominates the underlying offensive stats amongst all players in the league.
