Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 5 Top Picks

Last modified date

The new season of German League football continues so we take a look at the Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 5 top picks. Bundesliga Fantasy expert and regular contributor @FPLGunnersaurus reveals three of the best defenders, midfielders and forwards for the new round.

The Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 5 top picks can be extremely useful for managers. With lots of changes to the game this season it could be difficult to adjust for managers. But the following top picks can help you bring clarity to some of the decisions you have to make ahead of the deadline.

Note: This has been written ahead of Hoffenheim and Frankfurt in Europa League on Wednesday and Thursday evening.

Defenders – David Raum (15m / 7% TSB / RBL)

Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 5 Top Picks

With a home game on MD5 against an Augsburg side who have conceded 10 league goals so far one would think Raum isn’t the only player from Die Roten Bullen mentioned in this article. Yet he is, given their current form and in-form options elsewhere.

I believe there is a genuine case to take out Grimaldo this matchday. In that event someone like Raum would be a great star defender option. In our only look at a Leipzig home win so far this season Raum returned 314pts on MD1 (without a goal or assist). Leipzig need to start winning and they will want a statement victory here. The more goals they score the more likely it is there’s a Raum involvement.

Dayot Upamecano (12m / 6% TSB / FCB)

Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 5 Top Picks

If I told you Upamecano was the second highest scoring defender in the game would you believe me? With 1,005pts and only behind Grimaldo that is exactly the case. In three of his four games the French centre-back has 250pts+ fantasy scores.

It’s no wonder when he’s top 10 for both ground duels and aerial duels won (2/3 of his total fantasy points). This is as well as having a league third best 95.77% pass completion rate (1/3 of his total fantasy points have come for his build-up play which is astonishing). Add in a goal here and there and he really is the dream fantasy defender, one worthy of inclusion even against MD5 opponents Leverkusen.

Lukas Kübler (7m / 23% TSB / SCF)

Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 5 Top Picks

If you’re looking for a cheap enabling defender this matchday you can’t go wrong with Freiburg right-back Kübler. The right back returned a massive 415pts at home on MD1. This was thanks to a surprise brace of goals and he returned a decent 241pts at home on MD3.

With my players I’m looking for someone who can score 20pts per million spent and with Kübler he is currently exceeding that. At 7m and with a home game against St. Pauli, who have only scored once this season, it’s just one of those sensible picks.

  • Alternatives – Weiser (13m / 11% TSB / SVW) / Kristensen (10m / 2% TSB / SGE) / Leite (9m / 11% TSB / FCU).

Midfielders – Kevin Stöger (15m / 5% TSB / BMG)

Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 5 Top Picks

Summer signing Stöger is close to approaching 1000pts in the game. This is despite only having registered two assists (add to that his Gladbach side losing three in four) – a testament to his overall all around ability and his routes to points in the game.

It’s only matter of time until the Austrian scores and nets a haul eclipsing his 309pts season high. MD5 opponents Union Berlin frustrated Leipzig on their most recent away trip. But, given Stöger’s 5.8 average key passes per game he should be unable to unlock a defence that has only conceded twice so far.

Pascal Groß (11m / 17% TSB / BVB)

Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 5 Top Picks

Given that Die Schwarzgelben host Bochum on Friday night owning a Dortmund player, or two, makes sense this matchday. Midfield options alongside Groß include Brandt (14m) and Bynoe-Gittens (10m and if he starts). But, the more reliable option is still Groß. Dortmund got torn apart on MD4 in their 5-1 away loss which saw Groß hauled off early.

Home form clearly supersedes away form at this point in time. With that and the German scoring 206pts+ on both starts at home, fantasy managers may err on the side of caution rather than the explosiveness of others in black and yellow.

Ritsu Dōan (10m / 4% TSB / SCF)

After recent performances Dōan’s teammate Grifo (12m) should definitely be in your team. However, there is strong case to double up on the Black Forest club’s midfield. Dōan gets more shots off then his Italian colleague (12 v 6). As a result his xG is higher (2.42 v 1.74) which is the seventh highest in the league actually.

His last two scores in Bundesliga Fantasy were 245pts and 260pts. This is evidence that he is great value for money at 10m. Freiburg host winless St. Pauli on MD5. This could be a field day for the Breisgau-Brasilianer in their current form.

  • Alternatives – Grifo (12m / 9% TSB / SCF) / Millot (11m / 6% TSB / VFB) / Larsson (7m / 4% TSB / SGE).

Forwards – Harry Kane (20m / 36% TSB / FCB)

I shouldn’t need to point out the obvious in these articles. But, for some reason 64% of managers currently don’t own Harry Kane. Kane is showing us exactly why he’s the most expensive striker in the game, first for both goals and assists in the Bundesliga this season so far.

In the topspiel of the weekend it’s the record champions Bayern hosting the current champions Leverkusen. Despite this I will be starring Kane. This is especially considering that Leverkusen’s leaky defence have conceded nine times already. This, for comparison purposes, is seven more than Union Berlin and a league joint fourth worst.

Omar Marmoush (11m / 12% TSB / SGE)

It’s a second week running in this article for Frankfurt’s Egyptian forward. Marmoush netted the second goal in their MD4 2-0 home win and returned 251pts for his new owners. Die Adler are flying high right now with three wins on the spin. They couldn’t ask for a better match up on MD5 to make that four in a row.

They travel to Holstein Kiel who have conceded the most goals in the league, have a league worst home xGA of 2.05xGA and already look like this season’s whipping boys. This pick is a total non-brainer.

Chukwubuike Adamu (6m / 34% TSB / SCF)

Completing a trio of Freiburg picks is Adamu who also features again despite blanking last matchday. With Grifo running the show for Freiburg in their 3-0 away triumph over Heidenheim Adamu only registered one shot on goal himself.

Back at the Europa-Park Stadion Adamu will look to pick back up where he left off on home soil when he scored a brace of Bundesliga goals, his first goals for the club. Against St. Pauli maybe Adamu and his 6m price tag could tempt you into a 3-4-3 formation with the aforementioned Kane and Marmoush as his strike partners.

  • Alternatives – Guirassy (19m / 2% TSB / BVB) / Openda (15m / 14% TSB / RBL) / Burkardt (10m / 2% TSB / M05).
