AFCON Fantasy Best Captain for Gameweek 2

In this article we take a look at the AFCON Fantasy best captain for Gameweek 2. We pick out some of the best options challenging for the armband using stats, team and player form, and any other information that can help us come to a conclusion.

Picking out the AFCON Fantasy best captain for Gameweek 2 is going to be extremely important towards the success of our campaigns. Unlike in previous years, managers cannot change captaincy every match. The fact that we have only one opportunity per round for captaincy makes it even more important when it comes to making the right decision.

The Options – Mohamed Salah

Egypt came into the competition in scintillating competitive form after winning five of their six AFCON qualifiers and scoring 10 goals in the process. Equatorial Guinea proved a tough side to get a result from in the first round but Egypt still netted twice which is a good reflection of how good they are offensively.

Ghana lay ahead for Egypt and although many will see this as a tough game for Egypt the Ghanaians lost their first match 2-1 against Cape Verde. In terms of their recent results in general Ghana won just one of their last five matches coming into the competition, showing real instability.

The main man at Egypt is of course Mohamed Salah (€12m). Many felt that Salah didn’t shift out of first gear during the first round but he still banked a huge 12 points for his goal, assist and five key passes. All it takes is one excellent game for Salah and he could do serious damage to his opposition and the fact he is on penalties as well only boosts his captaincy appeal.

Musa Barrow

Gambia aren’t exactly one of the strongest teams in the competition but they are fully competent when it comes to scoring goals. In fact, prior to their last two matches they managed to net at least two goals in three consecutive matches. We could have also seen an entirely different game against Senegal in Gameweek 1 if it wasn’t for the red card they picked up.

Gambia face Guinea up next up in what could be a must win game for both sides to increase their chances of progressing. Defensively Guinea have picked up just one clean sheet in their last five matches in all competitions so there is potential for the Gambian attackers.

Musa Barrow (€7.5m) isn’t a premium and isn’t a name many expected to be considered for the captaincy. However, Barrow is the talisman of his team, we saw that in the last AFCON where he scored two goals and created two assists in just five matches. We also saw flickers of his potential against Senegal. Even playing for a 10 man Gambia side in the first round Barrow still banked five points due to key passes and duels. On set pieces and as a player who suits the scoring structure perfectly Barrow could be a great option this week.

Patson Daka

Like Gambia, Zambia are another side going under the radar for captaincy this week. In the four games prior to the start of AFCON Zambia scored nine times with four goals against current AFCON participant DR Congo. They also topped their qualifying group ahead of hosts Ivory Coast and put four goals past them in their two head-to-heads.

Zambia are a fully capable attacking unit and they have a meeting against 121st FIFA ranked Tanzania next up. Tanzania scraped through their AFCON qualifying group ahead of Uganda by a single point which suggests they could be a great team to target.

Most of what Zambia do these days goes through Patson Daka (€7m). The Leicester striker has become integral to their frontline and in his last seven matches for them has bagged a huge seven goals. In terms of recent form Daka has also managed 10 goals and two assists in his last 10 matches for club and country.

Who is the best captain for Gameweek 2?

Musa Barrow and Patson Daka are both very good captaincy options for the round ahead. In fact, for managers looking to go different then you won’t find much better. However, the best captain for Gameweek 2 is Mohamed Salah.

Not only is Salah in excellent recent form for his club but he has also hit the ground running in AFCON. His side are one of the competitions favourites and come up against a Ghana side who will be desperate to win. Salah has the ability to pick up points even when he isn’t playing at his best which is another contributing factor.
