MLS Fantasy Round 28 Team Reveals

Notes

  • In goal, I like the look of Stefan Frei and Yohei Takaoka as fallback ‘keepers. Frei edges it as things stand, partly because of Houston’s sketchy away form. Not just that but also because I think Portland are capable of scoring against Vancouver even without the suspended Evander, especially as Vancouver may rotate after the Canadian Championship Final.
  • In terms of the early games, there are a few teams I can potentially see keeping a clean sheet. San Jose are comfortably the worst team in MLS at the moment. That is why I’ve currently gone for Jonathan Sirois. However, Montreal aren’t exactly in great form themselves, so I may still look elsewhere.
  • In defence, I’ve paired Sirois and Frei with bonus point generators Gabriele Corbo and Jackson Ragen, respectively, with Ragen now (perhaps unexpectedly) the most expensive defender in the game.
  • Jordi Alba and Kai Wagner both delivered offensive returns in the last double gameweek and I can also see them having success at both ends of the pitch this week given their matchups.
  • With the LA Galaxy and seemingly fixture-proof Riqui Puig on a bye this round, four of the five midfield spots probably pick themselves. Lucho Acosta, Ryan Gauld, Daniel Gázdag and Carles Gil are all locked in my team. However, as with Takaoka, I am slightly worried about Gauld being rotated, particularly with few players to pivot to at the end of the round.
  • The fifth midfield spot is where you can take a punt a this week. Marcel Hartel and Albert Rusnák look to be the best remaining options. Rusnák makes my squad on the strength of his bonus point generation and share of set pieces.
  • Santiago Moreno has previously performed well in Evander’s absence and could be an option, as could Hany Mukhtar. Providing he starts, I see no reason not to take and captain Lionel Messi this week, despite his disappointing score in the last round.
  • Elsewhere upfront, I expect Cucho Hernández to also do well against a DC United defence that shipped four goals against Philadelphia. Tai Baribo and Luis Suárez are vying for my last forward spot. Philadelphia also need to win to stay in playoff contention, which tips the scales in Baribo’s favour.

Notes

  • LAFC has been struggling recently so with their midweek Open Cup match, I think Cincy is a good defence to target on the early slate.
  • I also really like Philly’s matchup against Atlanta. So, not only do I have Wagner, but I am also committing to their attack with Baribo and Gazdag.
  • Miami also have a favourable matchup and I see goals coming their way, especially if Messi starts. That is why I have the armband on him and have Alba on the bench.
  • All three of Gauld, Hartel, and Gil have favourable home matchups. I’m very much committing to that Vancouver team against an Evander-less Portland side with Takaoka as my fallback keeper and Brian White as a starting forward.
  • I honestly don’t think Seattle keep a clean sheet against a red hot Houston side. But, I have Ragen as a fallback defender.
  • If Herrera is good to start, I like him a lot as a BP producer against this Seattle defence. If bad news comes out about him as we get closer to Friday, I might pivot to Bassi or shift completely to Lewis Morgan or Lucho Acosta as a differential bench play.

Notes

  • No DGW this week and LAG are on a bye which takes out a few hot players.
  • With play-off positions being finalized focus on teams with things to play for.
  • I will be watching Miami and Columbus line-ups closely.
  • LAFC with a midweek trophy over Sporting KC is an avoid or a close watch at best this weekend.
  • I like the Seattle and Vancouver matchups.
  • Philly are in ninth spot and can move up.
  • NE are in trouble and NSH is heating up so I like Hany/Surridge this week, one of a few captain options though, they are on the road.

MLS Fantasy Round 28 Team Reveals

Notes

  • MID: Kai Wagner (PHI; 11.2m): With 161 points, Kai Wagner is the highest-scoring defender in the MLS. He has a lot of upside due to his frequent usage in open play and set pieces. The German winger leads Philadelphia with 10 assists, and he’s hit double-digit fantasy points in all seven of Philadelphia’s DGWs this season (15, 19, 10, 10, 20, 11,13).
  • FWD: Cucho Hernández (CLB; 13.7m): Cucho Hernández has been unstoppable this season. He has scored 11 goals and has seven assists in his last 14 games. Cucho, Diego Rossi, and Christian Ramirez, the attacking trio for the Crew, have a lot of potential and should be considered for your line-up this week.
  • FWD: Messi (MIA; 16M); Lionel Messi wasted no time reminding fantasy managers that he’s a must-have player when he’s in the match day squad. The GOAT returned from an extended absence with two goals and an assist in Round 26.
