Initially priced at just £11.5m, owning the 36-goal Norwegian felt like an FPL cheat code. So how much should Erling Haaland cost for 2023/24?

Big things were expected when Haaland arrived at Man City from Dortmund last summer. But to this level? No adjustment period was needed at all, as an opening-day brace at West Ham was soon followed by three successive home hat-tricks.

His breathtaking start took ten matches to produce its first blank, going on to score a record-breaking 36 goals in his debut campaign. No player has ever netted so many in a Premier League year.

Naturally, this embedded him in the FPL template to the point where there was no joy in his goals. Barely any gain from his hauls, with captaincy often a boring decision.

So how will FPL Towers price Haaland for the 2023/24 season?

Of the four above Haaland, Luis Suarez was immediately sold that summer, Cristiano Ronaldo became a £14.0m midfielder for the following season whilst the other two were priced as £13.0m options in the same position.

It’s been ten years since someone’s initial price exceeded £13.0m but van Persie’s came after ‘only’ scoring 30 and 26 times over the previous two campaigns.

THE THINKING BEHIND HAALAND COST

There’s been a general acceptance that 2022/23 prices were fairly generous, possibly rectified on the next occasion. Haaland needs to be given a number that will force managers to think. Should 15-man squads be neglected by devoting so much money towards one player?
