Who were the best 2022/23 FPL goalkeepers?

With the Premier League season over, let’s use points and underlying data to pick out the best FPL goalkeepers

At Fantasy Football Scout, you can take part in the end-of-season awards by voting for one outstanding goalkeeper. CLICK HERE to do so.

The list of candidates takes several things into account, such as overall score, value and points per match. It also considers those who excelled in the second half of 2022/23, following the World Cup break.

Here are the nominees.

FPL goalkeepers

Best FPL goalkeepers

Nick Pope

  • 157 points, start cost £5.0m, end cost £5.4m

Until the end of Gameweek 21, Pope was dominating FPL’s goalkeeping landscape. A sixth consecutive clean sheet had been bagged for over 2.6 million managers, conceding only twice in 11 matches.

However, Newcastle’s subsequent push for Champions League football brought more goals at both ends of the pitch, contributing to just two shut-outs in Pope’s final 17 outings.

The main hindrance to Pope’s FPL prospects was playing behind a solid defence that only allowed 127 shots on target, the second-fewest, meaning a low 87 saves were made. On a more positive note, he’s one of three keepers to save multiple penalties.

David Raya

  • 166 points, start cost £4.5m, end cost £4.8m

Meanwhile, Raya has been a lovely mix of 12 clean sheets but with plenty of saves from low-threatening shots. This is because, during the season, Brentford conceded the second-most shots on target (197) whilst allowing the fourth-fewest big chances (67) – no team had a bigger difference between such numbers.

His 154 stops, 39 save points and 20 bonuses all rank first, alongside a 78.2% save percentage which is the best among regular starters. There was even time for an own goal!

David De Gea

  • 161 points, start cost £5.0m, end cost £5.1m

Perhaps De Gea’s FPL success is more about the team rather than the individual. Man United’s clean sheets escalated post-World Cup, adding 12 from a possible 24 to finish with a league-high 17.

But the Spaniard’s five bonus points and 71.1% save totals are the lowest of these contenders, whilst he’s also the only one with a negative number for expected goals (xG) prevented. It means that the Red Devils conceded 43 goals, despite facing shots on target that collected a lower xG.

Nevertheless, he ends as the third-highest-scoring goalkeeper and a strong alternative to defender Luke Shaw.

Alisson

  • 162 points, start cost £5.5m, end cost £5.5m

Barely picked within the FPL community, Alisson actually ended as the second-best stopper with 162 points. This was partly because of Liverpool’s lack of early clean sheets, grabbing just four from 18 matches and being third-worst for big chances conceded. Although they end 22/23 in that same spot, a respectable 14 clean sheets now rank joint-second.

The other reason for low ownership was Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late form. It should be said that Alisson ended on six more points than the full-back, for around £2m less.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

  • 118 points, start cost £4.5m, end cost £4.5m

Having not played until Gameweek 9, this late starter is down in 12th for total points but has a 4.07 points per match average that shares company with the other top goalkeepers. Kepa’s 75.8% save percentage ends only slightly behind Raya’s.

He was particularly popular ahead of the Gameweek 17 restart, where many new managers then benefitted from four clean sheets in seven matches. Unfortunately for them, just two more arrived after Gameweek 22.

Other FPL goalkeepers

  • Elsewhere, Wolves’ Jose Sa joins Pope on four double-digit hauls and is only beaten by Raya for bonus points (18).
  • Bernd Leno is the third and final name on four double-digit returns, whilst also coming second for save points (37).
  • Before his season-ending injury, Dean Henderson‘s 82 points was ahead of all stoppers bar Pope.
  • The cheap Jason Steele entered proceedings in Gameweek 26, bagging six clean sheets from 15 appearances.
