Who has the best record against their opposition?

Taking a look into game week one to see who has the best record against their opposition. Using a spreadsheet we can see how players did against the big six, the promoted teams, individual opponents and much more to help us with this. We’ll also use the Fantasy Football Scout members area to help us with some underlying stats.

Taking a look at players best record against data like this can help FPL managers maximise their points returns in the first game week. Not just that it also gives us an indicator of who plays well against who so we have that in our minds for the entire campaign.

Salah v Fulham

Salah v anyone has tended to be a great idea throughout his FPL history. The Liverpool man is arguably one of if not the greatest ever FPL asset managers have had. The highest scoring FPL player last season and penalty taker has a game week one fixture against newly promoted team Fulham.

On opening days Salah has bagged a double digit haul against promoted sides Leeds and Norwich. Coming away with 32 points on the separate occasions combined and consisting of three goals and one assist so the potential is there.

The Egyptian went on a run between 2017-2018 where he returned in eight matches against newly promoted sides in a row. With two goals and two returns in his last four matches against Fulham, Salah could do really well.

James Maddison v Brentford

The midfield maestro came just outside the top 10 total FPL scorers last season so looks to have his mojo back after a series of injuries kept him out. Four out of five of Maddison’s highest FPL returns have all come in the last season. Potentially showing his recent form is his best.

In the two matches Maddison played against Brentford the Leicester midfielder managed to return eight and 10 points, a goal in each game and four bonus points. With a good record against Brentford and in a great period of FPL form over the last year Maddison could have a great game week one.

Harry Kane v Southampton

With many players siding with Haaland in their FPL teams it could be interesting to know how good Kane can be against game week one opponents Southampton.

In the 18 matches the Spurs striker has played against the Saints he returned a total of 102 points which averages out at 5.6 points per match, a return every single game. If that wasn’t convincing enough Kane also managed to hit 21 and 17 points on two separate occasions against Southampton. Kane’s best record against shows that team to be Southampton.

Son v Southampton

If things weren’t bad enough having Harry Kane to deal with Southampton have to try to limit popular FPL asset Son as well. Son has also had plenty of success against the Saints. In fact in his last four matches against them Son has not failed to return in any of them.

More noticeable his 24 points against Southampton in 2020 where Son netted an incredible four goals in the match. FPL managers will be very excited to know that Son actually plays his favourite opponent in game week one.

Mason Mount v Everton

Mason Mount only became a serious FPL asset over the last 1-2 seasons with his position transition from a box to box midfielder to an attacker. Last season the Chelsea favourite came away with some big hauls. 24 and 19 points lead the midfielders top returns both against poor defensive sides.

Everton came close to relegation last season and that was largely argued to be because of the defence. Manager Lampard’s tactics tend to be known for being less defensive and considerably offensive which means the attacking potential is there.

Mount managed six double digit hauls in 2021 whilst one of those were at home interestingly the other five were away. Chelsea face Everton away in game week one and could have bags of potential taking the above into consideration.
