Best picks from Southampton for Double Gameweek 28

Southampton play twice in Double Gameweek 28. So let’s assess their best FPL options ahead of matches against Aston Villa and Newcastle.

Considering Southampton lost the likes of Danny Ings, Jannik Vestergaard and Ryan Bertrand over the summer, their current ninth-placed position and run of one defeat from ten is very impressive. It includes draws with Man City, Man United, a win at West Ham plus one of each versus Tottenham.

Furthermore, their last two matches have both brought wins and clean sheets. The Saints have a promising Double Gameweek 28, followed by matches against Watford (h) and Leeds United (a) that potential sandwich a participation in the big Blank Gameweek 30. However, this trip to Burnley only happens if they lose to West Ham in their midweek FA Cup clash.

Underlying Stats

Although these successive clean sheets followed a spell of 13 without one, Southampton’s defence have conceded the sixth-fewest goal attempts throughout the season. They also come seventh for having the most shots.

Owned by around 500,000 managers just a few weeks ago, over 1.3 million squads had cheap forward Armando Broja (£5.5m) for Friday’s match against Norwich. He blanked whilst strike partner Che Adams (£6.9m) scored his third goal in four games.

Yet Broja has had more shots and penalty area touches than Adams during these four games. It justifies the Albanian’s FPL popularity, especially when he costs £1.4m less.

Interestingly, midfielder Stuart Armstrong (£5.8m) beats them both for goal attempts, totalling 17 over these four matches.

Ownership for Double Gameweek

Broja is the most-owned Southampton asset, just beating the 11.9% of Tino Livramento (£4.4m). The young right-back has played all 90 minutes of these two wins, although there is still a worry that Romain Perraud will get back into Ralph Hasenhuttl’s line-up. Both he and Kyle Walker-Peters cost £4.8m, so FPL managers may want to look towards goalkeeper Fraser Forster (£4.4m).

Having taken the place of injured Alex McCarthy (£4.4m), Forster rotates well with the game’s second most-owned stopper Ben Foster. After both play twice in Gameweek 28, this is their schedule:

As mentioned in last week’s Fixture Focus article, James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) ranks first for corners taken, successful corners, crosses from free kicks and successful free kicks. Three penalties have been scored, whilst only Bruno Fernandes and Trent Alexander-Arnold have created more chances in total. He has 8.2% ownership.

Community Chatter – Best Picks

Philippe Coutinho has only recently joined the game, so this Fantasy Football Scout Community statistic looks good for Saints assets.

Elsewhere, FPL Olympian has several Southampton men on his radar.
