Arsenal and Manchester City Dumped Out of the Champions League!

Underachievers from 2021/22 to target in 2022/23

In this article we will take a look at players who had a quiet season in 2021/22 but could go big in 2022/23. These underachievers from 2021/22 could have underperformed through injury, form, confidence or a combination of factors.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

In season 20/21 DCL managed to play 2269 minutes in the Premier League for Everton. Compare that to the 858 minutes he produced in the season just gone and you will see a massive difference in minutes.

DCL is the focal point of the Everton attack usually. In addition, if rumours surrounding Richarlison’s future are true then the forward could also take the penalties. If Lampard recruits well and DCL manages to stay fit we could see a much better FPL asset in the new season after a quiet 21/22. Gameweek 12-18 looks to be the best period of fixtures for Everton so we can monitor his form and fitness prior to that.

Patrick Bamford £7.5m

Another forward and another player plagued with injuries during last season. Leeds were inches away from relegation and it really felt like they were missing the Englishman. In the season Bamford came up with Leeds he hit the ground running.

In the 38 matches Bamford played for Leeds in 2020/21 he managed to score 17 goals and create seven assists. 24 attacking returns resulted in a massive 194 points. one of the highest scoring forwards in the game in 20/21 and on penalties Bamford could really do well under new manager Jesse Marsch.

Bamford’s price for the 2022/23 season was released on Friday.

Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell could be easily go under the radar this season due to his long term injury last season. Chelsea and Tuchel have usually shown a very strong defence but attack largely with their wing backs. For that reason Reece James when fit was heavily selected last season whilst Chilwell was out. Interestingly Chilwell had higher points per minutes played than any other defender last season. In the 7 matches he did play the wing back managed 55 points, 7.8 points per match on average. Chilwell is fresh and ready to play for the new season and he could be one to watch.

Bruno Fernandes

There was a time Bruno Fernandes was hitting consistent and relentless points and hauls in FPL. In the 2020/21 season the midfielder became the highest FPL point scorer of the entire season with 244 points. Due to many factors including form, team form, change in manager, and loss of confidence Bruno landed nowhere near that points total last season. He was one of the biggest underachievers of the 2021/22 season. However, now and Man United have a new manager with big ambitions. If Man United recruit well and Bruno regains his confidence we could once again see a fantastic FPL asset.
