The Champions League continues! Today we pick out the UCL Fantasy Matchday 3 best captains. As well as picking out the standout captaincy option on each day of Matchday 3 we also select one or more differential options for those looking to gain rank early on.
UCL Fantasy managers have the ability the select a captain on each day of a Matchday. If you aren’t happy with your captain return on the first day then you can change your captain to another player on the second day.
The Best Captain on Tuesday 22nd October
Tuesday presents a difficult and limited schedule when it come to captaincy. However, there are several fixtures that standout, and Arsenal’s home match against Shakhtar is one of them.
Arsenal’s away form in the Champions League is hugely questionable. But, at home the Gooners are extremely difficult to play against. Their Matchday 2 victory against Paris is just one of many examples of that.
Shakhtar lay ahead up next. The Ukrainians proved in their latest 3-0 defeat to Atalanta that they struggle against strong attacking sides. Surprisingly they also sit fourth in their domestic league, which shows just how inconsistent they have been this season.
Regularly influencing their home form is penalty taker Bukayo Saka (€9m). The winger has been in fine form since the start of the season – scoring three goals and registering a huge seven assists in just nine matches in all competitions.
Saka goes into his next Champions League home match off the back of scoring against PSG in Matchday 2. With this and his upcoming opposition in mind, Saka stands out as the best captaincy option on Day 1, if fit. If not then take a look below.
Differentials
It has been a fairly good start for the Portuguese champions after claiming a win and a draw in their first two matches. Sporting continue to average a huge three goals score per game domestically, and we could well see that average actioned this week against Strum Graz.
Leading the Sporting attack is Viktor Gyökeres (€7.6m) who has already found the net in Europe this season. Added to his domestic league tally the Swede has amassed a whopping 12 goals and one assist in just 10 matches.
Another team we could look to for captaincy on Tuesday is Milan who host Club Brugge. Their 3-0 loss to Dortmund in the opening round immediately painted a target on their backs, and one player who could take advantage of that is in-form midfielder and likely penalty taker Christian Pulisic (€7.5m). As well as scoring in his meeting with Liverpool recently Pulisic has also averaged a goal contribution per game in Serie A so far this season.
Aston Villa have also proved themselves more than capable at home after their win against Bayern. An inconsistent Bologna defence could be just what striker Ollie Watkins (€7.5m) needs to add to the four goals and four assists he’s produced already this season. Watkins clearly has both form and fixture for those looking for a differential captain.
The Best Captain on Wednesday 23rd October
Wednesday has several good captaincy options, but one in particular should draw the most attention.
Manchester City regularly maintain an average of three goals scored per game. In fact, the 2022/23 winners go into their home match against Sparta Praha off the back of scoring four in Matchday 2.
It may be difficult to see anything other than another heavy home win this week, and it’s more than likely that penalty taker Erling Haaland (€11m) will be involved. With 10 Premier League goals already the Norwegian has been sustaining some fine form and a home game next could see him add to that.
Another factor worth highlighting is ownership. Haaland sits as the second highest owned player in the game. This means if you back against him with no success and he returns, it could be hugely damaging to both rank and mini-league position.
Differentials
For those deliberately looking to avoid Erling Haaland then Atalanta may be another side UCL Fantasy managers look to for the captaincy armband.
Bruised coming off the back of a humiliating 7-1 defeat against Dortmund, Celtic appear to be one of the best teams to target this week. The Scottish side are regularly poor away from home in the Champions League and Atalanta should take advantage.
Joint top for goals scored in Serie A, Atalanta could do some serious against Celtic and one of two players who could do well is midfielder Ademola Lookman (€6.5m). Striker Mateo Retegui (€5.5m) failed to match the goal and assist Lookman produced but did amass a huge four attacking returns against Genoa recently. Both could be fantastic options this week.
There are plenty more differential captaincy options to choose from on Wednesday. Some may be tempted by Liverpool penalty taker Mohamed Salah (€10m) who picked up 14 points for his goal, assist and player of the match award in Matchday 2. The Egyptian faces a ropey Leipzig defence next up.
Some could even be sucked in by the upside of the Leverkusen wing-backs. Jeremie Frimpong (€5.6m) and Alejandro Grimaldo (€5.6m) have both impressed offensively, managing four attacking contributions between the during Matchday 1 and 2.
For UCL Fantasy managers looking to gain rank in Matchday 3, We picked out some brilliant differentials here.
