Top 10 Best Defenders in UCL Fantasy So Far

The international break is here and for Europe’s biggest clubs football is on pause. So, we take the opportunity, with the help of the official UEFA website, to look back and reflect on the top 10 best defenders in UCL Fantasy so far.

During the international break we will be continuing our coverage of UCL Fantasy. Keeping what has happened fresh in our minds could be hugely helpful for planning when the new round arrives. So, let’s take a look at the best defenders in UCL Fantasy so far, counting down from 10th.

6th-10th

The top 10 is full of some fantastic players and Pau Torres (€5m) is one of them. Aston Villa kept clean sheets against both Young Boys and Bayern in their first two matches which contributed to eight of his 17 points. Topping off his tally was the assist he created in Matchday 2 against Bayern.

Matching Pau Torres was Barcelona centre-back Inigo Martinez (€5m). Barcelona conceded and lost their opening match with Monaco. However, against Young Boys in Matchday 2 Martinez scored, assisted and kept a clean sheet to rake in a huge 16 points. A match against Bayern next however could put UCL Fantasy managers off.

Another player hitting 17 points in his first two Champions League games was Gabriel (€5.5m). Expectations were low of the Arsenal defence ahead of their matches against Atalanta and Paris. Doubts were quicky put to bed after the Gooners kept back-to-back clean sheets. Those clean sheets and 15 ball recoveries have helped the Brazilian hit his total. A game against Shakhtar next could see that tally increase.

Sporting defender Zeno Debast (€4.6m) edged all three with his 18 points. Nine ball recoveries in Matchday 2 meant Debast picked up just five points but his 13 pointer in Matchday 1 against Lille due to a goal and clean sheet contributed to most of his total.

Sitting in sixth place and also amassing 18 points was Leverkusen wing-back Alejandro Grimaldo (€5.6m). Two clean sheets and one goal is a great start for a defender who produced double-digits for goals and assists last season domestically. He has a fixture against Brest next up which could see him add to that.

5th – Filip Panak

Sparta Praha have taken many by surprise – picking up four points from matches against Salzburg and Stuttgart. Leading from the back is budget man Filip Panak (€4.1m). Panak had a fantastic opening match after hitting 14 points for his assist, clean sheet and player of the match award. Topping his total off was a five-point return due to ball recoveries in Matchday 2. Manchester City next up could be a step too far for both Panak and his side.

4th – Edmond Tapsoba

Alejandro Grimaldo has been impressive but teammate Edmond Tapsoba (€5.1m) has edged him in UCL Fantasy. As well as the two clean sheets the Leverkusen centre-back registered an assist and amassed 13 ball recoveries in his matches against Feyenoord and Milan.

3rd – Emre Can

Breaking into the top three is a player many had high expectations for. Emre Can (€5.1m), although a defender in the game, continues to play in a midfielder position. Can kept a clean sheet and registered an assist against Club Brugge in Matchday 1 and then scored in Matchday 2 against Celtic to rack up 19 points. Real Madrid could limit his potential in Matchday 3 but after that he faces Strum Graz and GNK Dinamo.

2. Alexander Bah

Just ahead of Can on 20 points is Benfica’s Alexander Bah (€5m). Bah played just 37 minutes in Matchday 1 against Crvena Zvezda but before being subbed off with an injury impressively managed four ball recoveries and one assist. His five-point return was then added to after he secured a huge 15 points against Atletico due to a goal, clean sheet and 10 ball recoveries.

1. Jeremie Frimpong

Taking top spot amongst the top 10 best defenders in UCL Fantasy so far is Jeremie Frimpong (€5.6m). The Dutchman, as well as claiming eight points from clean sheets, also registered an impressive three assists. Leverkusen have mixed fixtures – facing Brest, Liverpool and Salzburg in their next three. But, could investing in them anyway be rewarding?
