The Community Shield

We are very close to the start of the season and The Community Shield can provide a big lesson for FPL managers. We take a look at the line-ups, formations, team and player performances, player positions and more.

The Community Shield can be really important for FPL managers. From line-ups, personnel, injuries, gametime and much more there is plenty fantasy managers can take away from the game to help us make decisions early on.

Manchester City line-up

  • Ortega Moreno (£4m) started ahead of goalkeeper Ederson (£5.5m).
  • Although rumoured to be leaving both defender Kyle Walker (£5m) and midfielder Bernardo Silva (£6.5m) started the game.
  • The highest point scorer in FPL last season Erling Haaland (£14m) started the match.
  • Pep Guardiola opted for striker Julian Alvarez (£6.5m) ahead of Phil Foden (£7.5m).

Arsenal line-up

  • Its a strong backline from Arsenal of Aaaron Ramsdale (£5m), Ben White (£5.5m), William Saliba (£5m), Gabriel (£5m) and Jurrien Timber (£5m).
  • New signing Declan Rice (£5.5m) starts the game.
  • Midfield favourites Martin Odegaard (£8.5m), Bukayo Saka (£8.5m) and Gabriel Martinelli (£8m) all start in attack.
  • Kai Havertz (£7.5m) starts in a strikers position for Arsenal after several features in central midfield.

Match events

  • Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey (£5m) picks up a yellow card for his foul.
  • Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta receives a yellow card after asking for another player to be given a card.
  • Havertz has a great chance after a pass from White but Ortega made a comfortable save central to his goal.
  • Havertz is given a yellow card for a foul.
  • Alvarez picks up a yellow card for kicking the ball away after the referee gave an Arsenal free-kick.
  • Havertz has another chance to score but its a great save from Ortega to deny him.
  • John Stones comes close with a header from the corner but Ramsdale makes the save.
  • Phil Foden replaces midfielder Jack Grealish (£7.5m) around the hour mark.
  • Haaland is replaced after 64 minutes.
  • Gabriel picks up a yellow card.
  • GOAL! Cole Palmer (£5m) hits a shot from the edge of the box after fellow midfielder Kevin De Bruyne (£10.5m) found the pass!
  • Foden has a good chance to make it 2-0 but his drilled shot was low towards to the middle of the goal and easily saved.
  • Manchester City midfielder Rodri (£5.5m) comes close to scoring via a headed shot from a corner. Ramsdale makes a great stop to deny him.
  • Eight minutes of stoppage time is added.
  • GOAL! Saka slides the ball into midfielder Leandro Trossard (£7m) who fires a deflected shot into the Manchester City net.
  • Arsenal win the penalty shootout.

Erling Haland

Haaland had a very quiet game as he registered no shots on target, no shots off target and failed to register a single key pass.

Star performers

  • Trossard picked up the highest player rating (7.7) after scoring the equaliser and converting a penalty in the shootout.
  • Saka managed a 7.5 rating – he created an assist, had two shots off target and created three key passes leading to shots.
  • Ramsdale picked up a 7.4 rating for his four saves, three saves inside the box and one penalty shootout save.
  • Foden banked a 7.0 rating for his shot on target, one key pass and big chance.

Stoppage time and rule changes

  • It was clear that the referee was giving yellow cards for time wasting in general which could be significant in the season ahead.
  • 17 minutes of additional time was played. There has been a significant change in league football in the first weekend which could see plenty of added time moving forward.
