The Big Changes to FPL Challenge

Last modified date

In this article we take a look at the big changes to FPL Challenge. FPL Challenge Beta was introduced last season as a trial. Fantasy Premier League trialled an extra game alongside the FPL season-long game. From their Beta version they have come up with some big changes for the 24/25 season.

The big changes to FPL Challenge are obviously hugely significant. Knowing how changes are going to affect a game can change everything from the appeal we have to playing a game from the approach we take to playing a game.

Season Long Mini-Leagues

One of the biggest changes to FPL Challenge is the introduction of season long mini-leagues.

Last season points earned by a manager would wipe at the end of each round. This meant that there was an overall winner and rank at the end of each round but scores and rank would reset every Gameweek.

This time around managers can play the long game. This means that a players weekly score and rank will accumulate every week and contribute to your overall score and rank at the end of the season.

You can also make your own mini-league, like in FPL, along with the opportunity to win prizes.

‘Events’ Start with 5-a-side

This season managers are able to compete to win ‘events’. ‘Events’ are a group of Gameweeks that surround a theme.

The first event starts with a 5-a-side theme as you have probably guessed by both the title and the image.

The 5-a-side theme will consist of four Gameweeks. Each Gameweek there will be a different Challenge, all four are picture below.

Let’s run through what each of the four Challenges mean:

  • Debut – There are no limitations for either budget or formation.
  • All out attack – You have a £35m budget to select a goalkeeper and four forwards. Goals are worth double points.
  • Promoted punt – You have a £24m budget and you can only choose players from promoted teams. You can also use any formation.
  • Top big at the back – You must pick two goalkeepers and three defenders with a budget of £30m. Clean sheets are worth double points.

Rank Badges

The more competitive managers have the opportunity to improve their rank badge. You can see your rank badge in your player profile and across your leagues.

You can earn rank badges based on your Gameweek performances. The better you do the higher your rank badge will be.

You can see all rank badges available to you in the image below. The worst rank badge you can earn is Bronze the best you can earn is Legend.

Each rank badge contains five stages of progress, this is pictured below.

No Substitutions or Vice Captains

Last season managers were able to take advantage of a ‘hack’. That ‘hack’ gave managers the opportunity to start players who were never going to start in their starting XI and bench players starting earlier in the week. This meant that if the players on bench performed well then they would simply let auto-sub take place, if not then they would upgrade the players in the starting XI to players yet to play.

Mangers were able to do something similar with the vice captaincy and captaincy armband.

However, with no substitutes and vice-captains the playing field has been levelled, giving everyone an equal chance of winning.
