The best captain for Gameweek 33

We find the best captain for Gameweek 33. With the help of the Fantasy Football Scout members area we can use the season ticker and underlying stats to find the best captaincy option for the Gameweek ahead.

Captaincy is one of the most important decisions a manager can make in fantasy football. Writing up a shortlist of options can be helpful but picking out the best captain for Gameweek 33 can be even more important for FPL managers.

Fixture ticker

Below you can see teams near the top with the easier fixtures, going all the way down the table to teams with the tougher fixtures. The season ticker can be very helpful. However, won’t always give us the full story on which players make the best captaincy options.

The options – Ollie Watkins

Aston Villa are mounting a challenge for European football and they look set to achieve that if they continue their great form. To highlight their offensive form as of late they rank amongst the best five teams in the last six Gameweeks for goals scored (14), attempts on goal (90), big chances total (19) and shots on target (31).

Fulham lay ahead for Aston Villa. The newly promoted side have had a solid campaign this season but have also been conceding some concerning defensive stats. Not only have Fulham failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last six Gameweeks but they have also conceded more big chances than any other side in the division this season (92).

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins (£7.7m) should be considered for captaincy in the round ahead. The penalty taker has collected eight returns in his last 10 matches reflecting brilliant form. To reinforce his appeal, in the last six Gameweeks amongst all players Watkins ranks joint second for goals scored (six), joint first for attempts on goal (25), joint first for shots in the box (24) and first for big chances total (10).

Erling Haaland

Manchester City will be hoping to cut Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table short this week. The holders have been maintaining some of the best attacking stats in the league this campaign. An example of this is the fact they sit first for goals scored (78), first for goals scored inside the box (45), first for big chances total (108) and joint second for shots on target (172).

A pivotal clash against league leaders Arsenal lays ahead for Manchester City. Arsenal may have produced some great underlying defensive data this season but there has been a considerable change as of late. In the last two Gameweeks Arsenal rank joint fourth worst for goals conceded (five) and amongst the worst eight teams for shots in the box conceded (19) and big chances conceded (five).

Contributing to a large portion of Manchester City’s goals is Erling Haaland (£12.2m). The Norwegian takes his teams penalties and is the focal point to the lethal attack. Not just this but he has also banked a massive 32 goals and five assists this campaign so far. Haaland also dominates a lot of the key attacking data points amongst all players.

Mohamed Salah

Liverpool are hoping to make a late dash for top four. The Reds may have shown inconsistencies this season but in terms of their offensive data they are up there with some of the best. Amongst all teams this season they rank third for goals (59), second for attempts on goal (487), second for shots in the box (359) and second for big chances total (102).

The Reds face a game against relegation battling West Ham next up. The Hammers rank around mid-table for the majority of the key attacking data points. This suggests that their not a team to target. However, how their defence holds against efficient attacks is questionable. This can be reinforced when considering West Ham conceded four or more goals against Newcastle and Brighton recently.

Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) seems to be gaining some consistency lately. The Egyptian penalty taker has managed four returns in his last six games. Not just this but Salah is also maintaining some promising data. Amongst all players in the last six Gameweeks he ranks joint third for goals scored (five), joint second for attempts in the box (19) and joint third for big chances total (seven).

Gameweek 33 projected points

As we can see below, all three of our captaincy options make the top six for projected points in Gameweek 33. Leading the way is Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah with 5.3 points each.

Who is the best captain for Gameweek 33?

Whilst Ollie Watkins is a great option, his opponent Fulham have been sustaining some solid underlying defensive data recently. Aston Villa have also failed to maintain stats as good as the other teams options. It could be a tough decision between Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland and we can see that from their projected points. However, the latter has proven relentlessly consistent. Not just this but Haaland has also shown he is the most explosive player in FPL this season whilst also sitting as the highest scoring player in the game.

Taking all of the above into account, Erling Haaland is the best captain for Gameweek 33.
