Should we stick with Tottenham assets?
Some of the most popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players belong to Tottenham, so Sunday’s home defeat to Ipswich will be causing concern.
Pedro Porro (£5.5m), Dominic Solanke (£7.7m) and Brennan Johnson (£6.8m) are owned by 27.6%, 16.4% and 11.4% but the impressive 4-1 win over Aston Villa has been followed by a very ‘Spursy’ performance.
Upcoming fixtures mix tough opponents with ones who, for all we know, could replicate the Tractor Boys’ success.
Let’s assess the dilemmas that managers currently have over Spurs assets.
PORRO
Not only did Ange Postecoglou’s side enter Gameweek 11 as the league’s top scorers, they’d conceded the second-fewest shots on target. However, this defensive improvement hasn’t unfolded in FPL, as only one clean sheet took place throughout their last nine matches.
There’s also very little potential for them over upcoming weeks, once you notice Fulham’s form and Bournemouth’s results versus big teams.
At least was able to assist on Sunday, grabbing his first attacking return since opening day. He’s the number three defender for chances created (20) and the best for shots (19).
For Erling Haaland’s (£15.2m) owners, the precious money taken up by Porro feels needless. But those without the Norwegian will be flush with cash. In which case, having such an attacking full-back may be handy.
SON + JOHNSON
Despite Postecoglou talking about recently managing his minutes, Son Heung-min (£9.9m) played all 90 as they desperately chased an equaliser. He racked up four shots against Ipswich but they accumulated just 0.08 expected goals (xG).
As well as that, the 32-year-old is yet to deliver an attacking return away from home. You’d expect better for such a price: for slightly more there’s Bukayo Saka (£10.1m), for a bit less you can get Bruno Fernandes (£8.3m).
Team-mate Johnson is cheaper and therefore more holdable, especially when you see he’s the league’s joint-second best for penalty area attempts (33). Although only one return has arrived in four matches, he netted in Gameweeks 5, 6 and 7.
Lesser-owned James Maddison (£7.6m) actually has Spurs’ highest points tally but he’s been benched for the latest couple of occasions. An easy sell.
SOLANKE
In fact, most of the FPL community’s frustration is aimed at centre-forward Solanke. His awful spell from Gameweeks 7 to 9 ended with a measly two shots, no big chances and 0.13 xG.
Faith was about to disappear, until a late 15-minute explosion against Aston Villa. Solanke’s sudden brace and assist meant he finished as Gameweek 10’s top overall scorer.
It tempted some to captain him at home to newly-promoted Ipswich but all he could muster was a disallowed goal and two points.
Simply put, he’s too unreliable when there are a multitude of cheaper forwards doing well – Chris Wood (£6.6m), Matheus Cunha (£6.7m), Yoane Wissa (£6.1m), Evanilson (£5.9m) and Danny Welbeck (£5.9m).
