The UEFA Champions League is the pinnacle of European club football, delivering drama, glory, and unforgettable moments year after year. From Real Madrid’s continued dominance to Manchester City’s long-awaited triumph, here’s a look back at the last five finals that shaped the modern era of elite football.

Previous Champions League Finals

2020 – Bayern Munich 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain

Date: August 23, 2020
Venue: Estádio da Luz, Lisbon
Scorer:

  • Kingsley Coman (59’)

Summary

Bayern Munich lifted their sixth Champions League title in a unique, pandemic-disrupted season where the latter knockout rounds were played as single-leg fixtures in Lisbon. Kingsley Coman, a PSG academy product, scored the only goal with a well-placed header from a Joshua Kimmich cross.

Hansi Flick’s Bayern completed a historic treble and won every match in their Champions League campaign. Manuel Neuer produced a world-class performance, denying Neymar and Mbappé throughout.

2021 – Chelsea 1-0 Manchester City

Date: May 29, 2021
Venue: Estádio do Dragão, Porto
Scorer:

  • Kai Havertz (42’)

Summary

Chelsea became European champions for the second time after defeating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. A brilliant through ball from Mason Mount set up Kai Havertz, who calmly rounded Ederson to score. City’s unorthodox line-up – lacking a defensive midfielder – was exploited by Thomas Tuchel’s compact and disciplined side.

N’Golo Kanté delivered a masterclass in midfield and was named Man of the Match. The win capped a dramatic turnaround for Chelsea, who had replaced their manager just months earlier.

2022 – Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool

Date: May 28, 2022
Venue: Stade de France, Paris
Scorer:

  • Vinícius Jr. (59’)

Summary

Real Madrid extended their European dominance with a 14th title, beating a Liverpool side that dominated large spells of the game. Vinícius Jr. scored the decisive goal from a Fede Valverde cross, but the real hero was goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgian made nine saves—most notably denying Salah and Mané—and was named Man of the Match. The final was marred by chaotic organization outside the stadium, which delayed the kickoff and led to widespread criticism of UEFA.

2023 – Manchester City 1-0 Inter Milan

Date: June 10, 2023
Venue: Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul
Scorer:

  • Rodri (68’)

Summary

Manchester City finally clinched their first Champions League title, completing a historic treble in the process. Inter Milan frustrated City with a strong defensive display and created several good chances of their own.

The breakthrough came when Rodri guided a loose ball into the bottom corner after a blocked cross. Ederson made a critical late save from Romelu Lukaku to preserve the lead. The victory was a crowning achievement for Pep Guardiola’s era at City.

2024 – Real Madrid 2-0 Borussia Dortmund

Date: June 1, 2024
Venue: Wembley Stadium, London
Scorers:

  • Dani Carvajal (74’)
  • Vinícius Jr. (83’)

Summary

Real Madrid claimed their 15th European title with a professional display against Borussia Dortmund. The German side impressed early on, missing chances through Adeyemi and Füllkrug, but Madrid’s experience shone through. Carvajal opened the scoring with a header from a corner, and Vinícius Jr. sealed the win after a Dortmund mistake.

It was a fitting farewell for Toni Kroos, who ended his illustrious career with another Champions League medal. Jude Bellingham also celebrated glory in his debut season with Madrid.
