MLS Fantasy Round 21 Team Reveals

Notes

  • In goal, I’d like to be able to include both Roman Celentano and Steve Clark this week given their respective teams’ clean sheet chances (both joint top with 34%). However, their fixtures overlap, meaning I’ve had to go with Celentano on the front end of my ‘keeperoo and Zack Steffen as my fallback.
  • There doesn’t look to be many obvious clean sheet chances outside of Cincinnati, Colorado and Houston this week, who are represented in my team by DeAndre Yedlin, Andreas Maxsø and bonus point magnet Micael, respectively. For that reason, I may run an autoroo and scrub my other defensive spots. Although, I haven’t ruled out a bench punt on a DC United or Montreal defender.
  • In midfield, Lucho Acosta, Mateusz Bogusz (who continues to put up monster hauls despite modest underlying stats) and Evander are all locked in my team. Although Lucho may still end up being a bench play given Obinna Nwobodo’s absence.
  • With Đorđe Mihailović already departed for Olympics duty, Cole Bassett – who has successfully stepped up into the number 10 role in Mihailović’s absence in the past, including Colorado’s most recent game against St Louis – takes my fourth midfield spot.
  • My final midfielder is likely to be one of Amine Bassi and Ryan Gauld. I’ve gone with Bassi for now, providing the Houston game goes ahead following last week’s storm. Houston have among the best goalscoring odds this week and Bassi continues to post decent Fantasy returns at home.
  • Upfront, Denis Bouanga is a no brainer on current form and a leading captaincy candidate notwithstanding the visit of an in-form Columbus side.
  • I also expect Chicho Arango and Federico Bernardeschi to do well this week as they come up against a couple of uncertain defences. Although, the similarly in-form Cucho Hernández and enigmatic Christian Benteke (yes, really) are also in my thoughts.

Notes

  • This feels like a weird week for defences. I’m committing to Cincinnati in the early games with Celenaton, Robinson and Lucho on my bench. If that falls through, I have Steffen and Maxso on my bench as well. I also have Micael, who has a solid CS chance against Minnesota, and Yamane on my bench who could have a solid offensive match against Dallas.
  • For my midfield I targeted strong home matchups with Espinoza, Bassi, and Bogusz. I currently have the armband on Evander, but that will probably change based off line-ups and team news.
  • To double up on my Evander captain pick, I like JRod’s goal scoring chances against RSL. But I also like Chicho’s chances against what tends to be a leaky Portland side. Bouanga at home is really hard to pass up on. Even if it is against a really good Columbus side.

Notes

  • Quick work with the late opening and an Inter-Miami bye week.
  • Lots of the top scorers are on the road this week, Lucho is at home and may get my Captain’s armband, though I hope he is quiet against CLTFC.
  • Only Saturday matchups so I am going best two out of the three from the bench with Rios from Atlanta as a punt. Gil at home may come into the 11.

  • MID: Luciano Acosta (CIN; 16.9m): With 205 total fantasy points, Luciano Acosta leads all players and is an absolute need this week. Acosta erupted for 28 points in Round 13 and 29 points in Round 18 of FC Cincinnati’s two previous DGWs. In Round 21, Lucho should be viewed as a “star“ player.
  • FWD: Cucho Hernández (CLB; 12.8m): Cucho Hernández has been unstoppable since returning to the Columbus starting line-up in Round 17. In his last six games, he has amassed an amazing seven goals and five assists. I’m expecting Hernández to feast on LAFC.
  • FWD: Denis Bouanga (LAFC:16.9m): Denis Bouanga has found the net in five of his last seven games, including a brace in Round 17’s triumph at Orlando City SC not so long ago. Look for Bouanga to keep it rolling against Columbus Crew this weekend.
