Looking at the MLS Fantasy Round 20 top picks can be extremely useful to managers. Focusing on some of the best assets for the new week could help with some of the most important decisions in the game like transfers and captaincy.
Round 20
The games keep coming thick and fast as MLS builds up to the Leagues Cup break. Round 20 is another double gameweek and a drawn out one at that, with games taking place across four nights between Wednesday and Sunday.
Top targets – Đorđe Mihailović, Colorado Rapids – Midfielder, $12.3m
Đorđe Mihailović and Colorado’s fortunes have undergone an impressive transformation since the early part of this season. In fact, aside from an 18-point haul against LAFC in Round 6, Mihailović only managed a solitary assist in the first ten rounds of the season.
However, since then he has averaged 9.8 Fantasy points per game, returning seven goals and three assists over that period. He is one yellow card from suspension though. So, consider stowing him on your bench for Colorado’s two home games.
Carlos Andrés Gómez, Real Salt Lake – Midfielder, $12.4m
While Chicho Arango is a must own this round (notwithstanding Real Salt Lake manager Pablo Mastroeni’s penchant for rotating him in double gameweeks), his midfield compatriot, Carlos Andrés Gómez, should also be one of the first additions to your squad. Gómez has had a breakout season in both real and Fantasy terms, contributing 10 goals and six assists from an xG+xA of 0.67 per game – the fourth highest rate among all midfielders.
Gómez scored highly in Real Salt Lake’s previous double gameweek and, with two winnable home games this round, I’m expecting big things from him once again. The only wrinkle is that he is also one yellow card from suspension, so could be worth benching depending on your risk appetite.
Cucho Hernández, Columbus Crew – Forward, $12.3m
The 2023 version of Cucho Hernández that dominated opposition defences last term looks to be well and truly back. After a slow-ish (by his own high standards) start to the season that was peppered by rotation and ill-discipline, Cucho has recorded an incredible 64 Fantasy points in his last four outings, including 6 goals and three assists in that time. Like Gómez, he plays twice at home in Round 20 and should be a leading candidate for captaincy this week.
Differential – Julian Gressel, Inter Miami – Defender, $8.2m
I remain cool on the Inter Miami defence (xGA of 1.61 per game, eighth worst in MLS), which has flattered to deceive for much of the season. However, there are signs that Julian Gressel may be back on the Fantasy menu, at least in the immediate term. The nomadic utility man is playing further forward in Messi et al.’s absence and is racking up returns once again, recording one goal, three assists and eight bonus points in his last four appearances. Clean sheet opportunities look unlikely given Inter Miami play away twice. But, I could see Gressel delivering attacking returns in both games.
