MLS Fantasy Round 2 Team Reveals

Notes

  • I like the Red Bulls’ home matchup against Nashville this week, which is why I’ve doubled up on Omar Valencia and Carlos Coronel on the front end of my ‘keeperoo.
  • Funds are tight this week, so I’ve once again gone with Oscar Ustari as a cheap fallback option, although I’m not expecting him to keep a clean sheet. There are also rumours that he may be carrying an injury, which is something to keep an eye on.
  • Matchup wise, I also like Minnesota’s fixture against Montreal, with Carlos Harvey the cheapest guaranteed starter in their defence and Kelvin Yeboah a lock upfront.
  • San Diego should do well again this week after their inaugural win against the LA Galaxy, with Paddy McNair currently their best defensive option. However, he will become Kai Wagner if I can find an extra $0.2 million without compromising the rest of my squad.
  • Matthew Edwards is my cheap defensive enabler at the moment. Although, I may switch him to Femi Awodesu for greater line-up flexibility.
  • Several of my midfield spots are up for grabs this week, with Martín Ojeda and Jonathan Bamba – who both have fixtures and form on their side this week – the only locks in my team. However, I do like the look of Federico Bernardeschi, who put up plenty of bonus points in Round 1 and faces an Orlando side that conceded four at home to Philadelphia.
  • Ryan Gauld and the Whitecaps looked good against Portland last week. How much of that was due to Portland’s shortcomings and their early red card remains to be seen. But, I still expect Gauld to flourish against what looked like an open LA Galaxy side. Possibly rotation due to CCC commitments is my only concern with him.
  • Pep Biel scored decently against Seattle in Round 1 and is my final midfield option as things stand, mainly because of price and fixture timing.
  • Upfront, Lionel Messi came off early in Inter Miami’s CCC fixture and should be good to start against Houston. Although, I’d have a backup plan in case he doesn’t, particularly if, like me, you’re planning to captain him.
  • Despite their win, Atalanta gave up plenty of chances to Montreal last week, so I’ve gone with Patrick Agyemang to complete my forward line.

  • The best CS for price odds I think fall to coronel. If he bombs and Ustari plays I’ll go him, but if Ustari isn’t playing, I’ll just take what I get from Coronel.
  • Valencia and Ricketts are both just there for value gain. If they do well, great I’ll happily take the points. If they don’t, I’ll take the value gain.
  • I like McNair’s floor this week and Hadebe is a cheap way to get into a great defence.
  • I love the value of Bamba and Bukari and their matchups.
  • Gauld only going 30 minutes midweek means he should be a lock for Sunday’s matchup.
  • Ojeda and McGlynn also have a high floor and good matchups.
  • Up front, captaining Messi feels like a must after he was subbed early midweek.
  • Yeboah had a great game against LAFC last week and could have easily had multiple goal contributions. I love this matchup for him and feel like he’s a must this week as well.
  • Agyemang has a nice matchup right now, but I really wish I could afford Benteke. If I can find the funds, I’ll push for him.

Notes

  • I’m finding some value in lower players who scored well in week 1 to catch rises like Ricketts, Biel.
  • I like the LAFC matchup home to LAFC and MIN home to MTL.
  • CLT ATL could be a high scoring affair early in the season, so I’m staying away from defence. I want Malanda in soon but he has Miami next week.
  • Messi stays as Captain at the moment.
  • I’m sticking with Bouganga and looking for a bounce back to cut the price drops, though he may swap out.
  • Morris had a big week last week at home.
  • I’m going with one scrub for now and see how the early match goes.

Notes

  • In goal, I’m going with NYRB’s Carlos Coronel on the front end with a good matchup at home to Nashville. Oscar Ustari is currently my fallback should Coronel fail to keep a clean sheet.
  • In defence, Bongokuhle Hlongwane was an easy inclusion for me this week despite being quite expensive. I’m also looking at Hadebe, Ricketts, Valencia and Negri.
  • In midfield, Ryan Gauld was also and easy inclusion this week after scoring on the opening day against Portland.
  • Martin Ojeda, Djordje Mihailovic, Osman Bukari and Jonathan Bamba completes my midfield.
  • Anders Dreyer is another midfielder I’m looking at after impressing on his MLS debut against MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy.
  • In attack, Denis Bouanga was a disappointment on match day 1 with a four pointer but I’m willing to give him another chance with a home matchup against NYCFC.
  • Kelvin Yeboah and Forster Ajago completes my front line.
