MLS Fantasy Round 12 Team Reveals

Notes

  • In goal, I’m backing Chicago and the budget-friendly Jeffrey Gal to frustrate Atlanta, who have struggled on their travels so far this season. Roman Celentano is my fallback, with the Austin attack also struggling for firepower.
  • Defensive double and triple stacks can be a powerful tactic, particularly by targeting home teams with good fixtures. With that in mind, I’ve doubled up on the Chicago defence and taken Andrew Gutman. With a lack of standout fallback options in the late slate and only one defender on my bench, I’ve selected four defenders from the early games in my starting XI. All four of Alex Freeman, Tayvon Gray, Andy Najar and Luca Orellano have decent offensive potential too, and Gray can easily be upgraded should Mitja Ilenič start instead.
  • In midfield, Evander, Đorđe Mihailović and Hany Mukhtar are all locked in my team. The other two midfield spots is where you can likely differentiate. I’ve gone with Federico Bernardeschi as an early bench play and David Da Costa as a late fallback from a roster flexibility perspective.
  • Upfront, I see no reason not to take Lionel Messi – and the Inter Miami forward will likely be captain again this week.
  • Hugo Cuypers is locked into my second forward spot, with Alonso Martínez currently taking the final spot. Martínez has only failed to score in three games so far this season and I expect he and NYCFC to do well at home to Montreal.

Notes

  • I love the NYRB matchup against a LAG team that’s in an injury nosedive. That’s why I’m tripling up on them.
  • Austin’s struggles give me a want for a part of the Cincy backline as well. I don’t love Portland’s chance at a CS, so if NYRB doesn’t hit, I’ll probably pivot elsewhere.
  • There are a lot of good home matchups this week. I love Bernardeschi, Evander (even after last week), Mihailovic, and Mukhtar.
  • Gil is away at Orlando, but I think he’s worth a punt seeing his form and Orlando’s underlying stats.
  • Cuypers hosting a struggling Atlanta backline feels like an easy bench play and I want any striker that plays against SKC right now, and whoever starts for Portland will be my guy.
  • Messi has been disappointing recently, but I have no worries about him smashing this week if he starts.

Notes

  • Messi is in the early match so I need to be flexible with the line-ups and captaincy in case we get a surprise.
  • I don’t love the early keeper choices, but I will start with Ustari on the bench.
  • Waffling on Coronel keeper, could go Portland. LA have been dreadful in terms of results though.
  • I’m leaving some flexibility for bench hauls with Vancouver assets for Sunday.
  • COL vs SJ could be a goal fest and I may be light on SJ, but I’ll stick with Col at home. Lennon vs Cuypers on the bench, at least one should do something.

Notes

  • Im looking at Jeffrey Gal on the front end of my keeperoo this week. Gal will stand in for Chris Brady this weekend against Atlanta United who’ve struggled for goals lately with only two goals scored in their last five games. My backup is currently Yohei Takaoka should Gal fail to keep a clean sheet, I also like the look of Celentano, Freese, Coronel and Gallese.
  • Luca Orellano was an easy inclusion this week despite him not living up to his fantasy hype thus far. The Argentine has recorded two assists in his last three playing OOP and is facing a Austin side who’s been struggling for goals this season.
  • Other defenders I’m looking at is Tavyon Gray, Nolan Norris and Noah Eile.
  • Djordje Mihailovic has six goal contributions in his last six appearances and I like his chances of adding to that tally at home against the San Jose Earthquakes this week.
  • I’m also considering a Portland mid this week with Antony currently making my squad ahead of his teammates, David Da Costa and Santiago Moreno.
  • I’m also currently on Evander, Hany Mukhtar and Martin Ojeda.
  • Lionel Messi is like always a lock unless he’s benched. My other two forward spots are currently occupied by Hugo Cuypers and Kevin Denkey who I fancy to score a couple goals between them.
