  • The New York Red Bulls have the best clean sheet odds this week. This makes Carlos Coronel and John Tolkin ideal bench plays. Hugo Lloris and Maxime Chanot (or another LAFC player of your choosing) are the best of a bad bunch of fallback options given the Round 12 fixture schedule.
  • Elsewhere in defence, I’m once again riding the Brooks Lennon train. He and Atlanta have the fixture to do well, despite flattering to deceive in recent outings.
  • Kai Wagner is also a shoo-in for me given Orlando’s woeful recent performances – My final defensive slot is currently occupied by Sam Junqua. FC Dallas’ opponents Austin have looked defensively resolute of late but continue to fire blanks in attack. Although, I am wary of the unpredictability of rivalry fixtures (and FC Dallas). For that reason, I may yet replace Junqua with a defender from St Louis City, who also have a favourable home matchup this week.
  • In midfield, Lucho Acosta was one of the first names in my team given form and fixture. Only one of the previous Hell Is Real derbies between Columbus and Cincinnati has remained scoreless.
  • I also like Emil Forsberg (I’m expecting the Red Bulls to fare well at both ends of the pitch against New England) and Evander, who, according to Phil Neville, should be available for Portland’s historically high-scoring Cascadia matchup against Seattle.
  • The returning Riqui Puig and Cole Bassett are my final midfield picks, although Bassett may be dropped for one of Thiago Almada or Dániel Gazdag should Djordje Mihailovic return to Colorado’s starting XI.
  • Upfront, captain Lionel Messi is joined by Denis Bouanga and Cucho Hernández. Bouanga disappointed his owners last week. But, both he and LAFC are different beasts at home, while I’m expecting Cucho to be at the forefront of the Columbus attack for Hell Is Real.
  • Luis Suárez is also in my thoughts following Inter Miami’s demolition of the Red Bulls and given Montreal’s poor form. However, it’s worth noting that Inter Miami significantly overperformed their xG in their last game.

Notes

  • The best defensive matchup this week is New York Red Bull hosting New England. I have them on my defensive bench stack with Forsberg starting. I expect New England to have limited chances and Forsberg to have plenty of time on the ball.
  • My fallback defense is Colorado, though I hope to be able to scrub Bombito and Steffen. If NYRB concede early, I will probably pivot to St. Louis defense instead.
  • Atlanta’s tough home form has made me question taking them. But, I currently have Lennon and will put Almada on my bench if Lucho isn’t fit for his game on Saturday.
  • Philly should be favorites against an Orlando side that has been awful on the road so starting Wagner and putting Gazdag on my bench felt necessary.
  • Bassett (especially if Mihailovic is still out), Evander, Cucho, and Bouanga all have favorable home matchups. Evander feels like a must own in a rivalry matchup against a struggling Seattle side and, for me, Cucho’s ceiling in his home rivalry matchup feels higher than Suarez on the road.
  • Captianing Messi needs no explanation. But, even on the road Miami should tear apart that Montreal backline.

Notes

  • I picked up a green arrow in Round 11 with double Charlotte defence so sticking there again with another home match.
  • There are a few good defensive matchups this week with NE on the road at NY and Dal hosting Austin.
  • I’m expecting to scrub the Portland keeper for the only match on Sunday.
  • The usual suspects sit in midfield, but I am also adding Petkovic in who will now be a mainstay.
  • The Paintsil position is still in play, not sure I want double Galaxy there.
  • I’m staying away from an out of form Atlanta.

Notes

  • DEF: Kai Wagner (PHI; 8.8) has scored seven or more points in four of his last six outings, averaging 4.56 fantasy points per game over that span. He flashed his attacking upside with a stunning goal to equalize late in Atlanta a few weeks back, and with the possibility of a clean sheet at home against Orlando city, the German fullback is in prime position to come away with another hefty point haul.
  • DEF: Brooks Lennon (ATL; 9.5): Brooks Lennon remains the highest-scoring defender in MLS Fantasy. With target man Giorgos Giakoumakis healthy again, it won’t be long before Lennon adds another assist to his tally. He has been hot to start the season, averaging 6.10 points per game.
  • MID: Luciano Acosta (CIN; 13.5m); Luciano Acosta has scored or assisted in seven of his last eight appearances, and a visit from Columbus Crew the 2023 Landon Donovan MVP winner back at the top of the heap this round.
  • FOR: Messi (MIA; 13.5M); Given his history, it would be risky to fade him as long as he is in the starting line-up on Saturday. He will probably remain the centre of attention for the Miami attack against CF Montreal. He racked up 28 fantasy points last weekend, running his average up to an eye-popping 15.38 points per round this season.
