So, from an FPL perspective, here are the Premier League names that have stood out so far.
EURO 2024
The top-scoring FPL players are currently all defenders with 16 points. Manuel Akanji has picked up seven just for ball recoveries, plus a Player of the Match award versus Scotland.
Then there’s Marc Cucurella – part of a Spanish backline yet to concede – and the Netherlands’ Nathan Ake, assister of two opening-round goals. He delivered a clean sheet against France, where William Saliba also benefitted from the goalless draw. Another name that hasn’t conceded.
On 14 points, we finally move out of defence and it’s another Man City star, Kevin De Bruyne. He’s taken eight shots overall, bringing in double-digits with his goal and Player of the Match against Romania.
Alongside Ake on multiple attacking returns is Kai Havertz. The Arsenal midfielder is a forward in Euro Fantasy, leading the way with 10 shots and ranked second for expected goal involvement (xGI, 1.91).
Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen has a goal and created the most chances (11), with Dominik Szoboszlai one of the best for setting up big chances (three).
Let’s also give a nod to centre-back Marc Guehi, who has been England’s best player up to now.
COPA AMERICA
There’s less to say about the major South American competition, as we’re only eight matches in. The opening one saw Alexis Mac Allister brilliantly set up Julian Alvarez‘s tournament opener, as Argentina secured a clean sheet for familiar names Emiliano Martinez, Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero.
Elsewhere, numerous Premier League defenders helped the hosts defeat Bolivia 2-0. Successful shut-outs for Chris Richards, Tim Ream, Matt Turner and Antonee Robinson, the latter of whom combines very well with Christian Pulisic down the left-hand side. In midfield was Tyler Adams.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay were dominant against Panama and – in a familiar sight – Darwin Nunez had five chances but eventually netted in the 86th minute.
Finally, to end on even more Crystal Palace love, Colombian duo Daniel Munoz and Jefferson Lerma both scored past Paraguay, assisted by James Rodriguez. Brighton’s Julio Enciso bagged a consolation.
