Early events
With Newcastle defeating Wolves 1-0 last night, the first match of Saturday took Man United away to Everton. Two teams having a poor season, both desperately needing a win. Cristiano Ronaldo made his return to the Man United line-up, as did Marcus Rashford.
Yet it was another terrible performance from the Red Devils- an Anthony Gordon goal was all it took to beat them. Suddenly, the nicer half of their Double Gameweek 33 doesn’t look so appealing.
Halfway through the second half, the 3pm team news came out. It brought a second consecutive league rest for Reece James to frustrate his owners. Armando Broja wasn’t able to face parent club Chelsea, whilst Emmanuel Dennis was again benched.
Chelsea very quickly ran riot at Southampton, finding themselves 4-0 up by the half-hour mark. Kai Havertz netted one but was replaced for the second half. Also off early was Watford forward Cucho Hernandez, with injury seeing him taken off for Emmanuel Dennis.
Goals for Raphinha and Leandro Trossard in the first 45 minutes.
Later on
Extra goals for Mason Mount and Timo Werner quickly made it 6-0 over Southampton. Then, Leeds and Brighton both went 2-0 up away to Watford and Brighton respectively, thanks to goals from Rodrigo and Enock Mwepu.
Additionally, Jack Harrison netted to make it 3-0 and likely kill off Watford’s survival chances. A long-range Martin Odegaard consolation was unable to deny Brighton their three points.
Finally, popular Spurs assets away to Aston Villa. Very early on, a blocked Harry Kane shot landed at the feet of Son Heung-min, giving both an FPL assist. However, the much-selected Matt Doherty left proceedings early with an injury.
Similarly, the second half began with a Spurs goal, as Dejan Kulusevski made it 2-0 from a Kane assist. Four of their last seven games have ended with at least a four-goal winning margin for Antonio Conte’s side, thanks to Son scoring twice more to complete his hat-trick. A rout.
Overall, 17 goals and four clean sheets arrived in Saturday’s five matches. Up next are four Sunday clashes, culminating in Man City vs Liverpool.
