FPL so far: The top-scoring midfielders

Last modified date

Now that we’ve completed the opening four FPL Gameweeks of 2023/24, here are the top-scoring midfielders so far.

Heading into the international break, we can see from the Premier League table that champions Man City have continued from where they left off. The only side with four wins from four, they’re two points ahead of Tottenham, Liverpool, West Ham and Arsenal.

Meanwhile, promoted trio Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United already form three of the bottom four.

From an FPL perspective, it’s time to assess the stand-out assets using Fantasy Football Scout’s Members Area data.

THE TOP FPL MIDFIELDERS

Points

The outstanding midfield asset during this opening period has been Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. Starting at just £6.5m, only Man City striker Erling Haaland exceeds his 33 points.

Also amongst the best is Tottenham pair James Maddison and Son Heung-min. The former has fit in seamlessly since his summer and ranks second overall for shots on target (nine).

Brighton duo Solly March and Kaoru Mitoma are resuming from last season’s latter months, whilst Man City’s Rodri has been given the license to get forward more often. He’s already on two goals and an assist.

Expected goal involvement (xGI)

Somehow, xGI data says Mbeumo is underachieving. He’s on four goals but his six big chances are the most of all midfielders.

Joint-second for chances created (14) are Mitoma, Bukayo Saka and Bruno Fernandes.

Elsewhere, owners of Eberechi Eze have been desperately unlucky so far. Until netting in Gameweek 4, he had blanked in his first three outings despite having a league-leading 16 shots.

Individual hauls

He’s not the only high-ranking midfielder to have three blanks from four. At least Fernandes finally delivered in Gameweek 3 against Nottingham Forest. Son had also been unproductive until Saturday’s hat-trick at Burnley.

Raheem Sterling’s 50 penalty area touches is the most overall, with Mitoma (40) second.

Interestingly, eight of the ten hauls above were all followed by blanks – the only exceptions being Jarrod Bowen’s goal at Luton and Diogo Jota’s four points at Newcastle. Will all those jumping on the Son bandwagon experience the same fate in Gameweek 5?
