FPL players at the World Cup

The World Cup is coming to its end and the start of the Premier League is just over a week away. For that reason, it could be beneficial to look back and reflect at how FPL assets performed at the World Cup with their international teams.

After a long break FPL managers will want to start building their teams using the unlimited transfers provided by the game. One of the ways FPL managers can monitor player form is taking a look at players time at the World Cup.

Kevin De Bruyne

Belgium came into the tournament as of of the highest ranked teams in the world. They faced Croatia, Canada and Morocco in the group stages and failed to progress. One of their star players, Kevin De Bruyne failed to meet the high expectations football fans held for him.

Kevin De Bruyne started against all three team in the group stage. The midfielder failed to pick up a single attacking return whilst creating eight key passes and two shots on target. Eight key passes is impressive but Belgium’s bluntness in attack hindered his output. Fortunately, the Manchester City man returns to play alongside one of the best strikers in the world in Erling Haaland.

Hakim Ziyech

Morocco have been fantastic during the World Cup and they still have the chance to win the third place play-off against Croatia. The African side won their group ahead of teams like Croatia and Belgium. They then went onto knock out both Spain and Portugal.

One of the key contributors towards their success was Hakim Ziyech. The Chelsea midfielder has managed to score a goal and create an assist so far. Along with that, Ziyech has also created six key passes. Ziyech will be hoping his performances have convinced manager Graham Potter to give him more game time as he has only started one Premier League match all season.

Luke Shaw

England were one of the favourites to progress in the World Cup. Unfortunately a match against France was a step too far. The English may have been knocked out in the quarter finals but they were very strong throughout their campaign.

One player who really stood out was defender Luke Shaw. The left back racked up three clean sheets and one assist whilst also providing a massive eight key passes. Manchester United face Nottingham Forest, Wolves and Bournemouth in the next three games so some managers could be looking to invest.

Bukayo Saka

England finished their World Cup tournament as one of the highest scorers in the competition. One of their in-form attackers was Arsenal man Bukayo Saka. Saka had a great tournament and bagged three goals in his four starts for England.

Saka also picked up five shots on target and five key passes in the same four starts, showing a good split of both assist and goal potential. This can also be reflected in his Premier League output as he has scored four goals and created six assists.

Harry Kane

England’s attackers continue to make an appearance after their free-scoring performances during their World Cup. Harry Kane is another player that impressed. The Tottenham striker collected two goals and three assists, averaging a goal contribution every match he played.

Harry Kane has, seemingly, gone under the radar in FPL this season, especially since the introduction of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. Kane has struck 12 goals and created one assist in his 15 Premier League matches so far. Tottenham have some great fixtures ahead, including a double Gameweek so managers could well invest in him this time around.
