Our FPL Gameweek 5 best differentials could give you a much needed boost to start the new season. Differentials are players who have low ownership. If those players are successful then it could both rank and mini-league position.

Jean-Philippe Mateta – 4.3% Ownership

Its been a mixed start to the new season for Manchester United. The Reds have won two and lost two so far. What is a concern though is that they have again lost key defensive players due to injury. This could mean we see a similar defence to last season which saw them rank amongst the worst teams in the league for attempts on goal conceded.

One of many teams who will look to take advantage of that in the coming matches is Crystal Palace. The Eagles are yet to hit the potential which we saw at the latter stages of last season. If they do click then it will be Jean-Philippe Mateta (€7.4m) who benefits. Mateta was crucial to their blistering end of season form last time out and after snatching a penalty off Eberechi Eze in the previous match he could well have even more appeal moving forward.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 2.7% Ownership

Everton are far from convincing when it comes to investment in general. However, the Toffees have netted twice in their last two matches on the bounce. This shows that they aren’t lacking when it comes to goals.

Trying to stop them score again this week is newly promoted side Leicester who rank second worst in the league for total shots conceded in the box. That is a metric which Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.9m) could scrutinise. The Everton penalty taker goes into the match with two goals and one assist in his last two games.

Bryan Mbeumo – 8% Ownership

Brentford have started the season better than many thought they would. Although well beaten by Liverpool the Bees were just edged by Manchester City in their 2-1 loss. They also claimed victories against both Southampton and Crystal Palace whilst also scoring 2+ goals in the process.

Tottenham lay ahead for Brentford who have been far from convincing defensively, similar to the previous season. Brentford penalty taker Bryan Mbeumo (£7.1m) has a good opportunity to add to the three goals he has already scored because of this. Teammate Yoane Wissa was also recently ruled out due to injury so the pressure is on him to perform.

Jamie Vardy – 8.2% Ownership

Leicester may not have won a single one of their four fixtures since returning to the Premier League but they have netted in all of them. This shows that they still pose a huge goal threat and that can be emphasised when realizing they come up against Everton next.

The Toffees pose a threat themselves but from a defensive perspective they are far from where they were last season. In fact, so far this season they have shipped between 2-4 goals in all of their fixtures. To target that ropey backline penalty taker Jamie Vardy (£5.7m) stands out. The fox in the box clearly still has it after scoring against both Crystal Palace and Tottenham already this season. Up against a much worse defence next he could match or even better that.

Leif Davis – 1.8% Ownership

Ipswich face Southampton this week and unlike their fellow promoted team the Tractor Boys have shown considerably more fight – drawing to both Brighton and Fulham. With this in mind we could take a look at the Ipswich assets going into the round ahead.

Since the start of the season no side has scored less goals than Southampton which could mean clean sheet potential for Leif Davis (£4.5m). Davis also offers considerable attacking threat as well. The flying full-back managed 20+ attacking returns last season and with an assist already in the Premier League he has proven he can do it in the top tier.
