FPL Experts Ahead of Gameweek 23

Last modified date

We caught up with some FPL experts ahead of Gameweek 23. The experts included cover a range of different topics from chips and the best players to player and team form and more as we head into the new round.

Catching up with the FPL experts ahead of Gameweek 23 could be both fun and insightful. The experts cover some of the key topics ahead of the new round which could help bring clarity to some of the decisions we have to make in our own teams.

Ahead of Gameweek 22, Newcastle went into their home match against Bournemouth having won their previous six matches on the bounce. For that reason, FPL managers piled in on the likes of striker Alexander Isak (£9.4m) and Anthony Gordon (£7.7m).

Newcastle were favourites against Bournemouth, but were well beaten 4-1. Both Isak and Gordon failed to contribute, meaning they both blanked for the first time in weeks. However, with Southampton away next, both could be considered essential, so selling now could be foolish.

One of the biggest moments of the week came in the match between Brentford v Liverpool. The Bees held on to a 0-0 score line for majority of the game, but that changed when forward Darwin Nunez (£7m) scored a quick fire brace at the death.

Failing to pick up any points for his second successive match was Mohamed Salah (£13.7m), who became a permanent captaincy pick for many due to his form. That may be the case, but the Egyptian faces Ipswich and then a double Gameweek in his next two rounds, so questioning him could lead to disaster.

One side who dropped points in Gameweek 22 was Arsenal. The Gooners drew 2-2 with Aston Villa, meaning the gap between them and the scintillating Liverpool has widened. The game also raised concerns over their dwindling defensive performances.

The Arsenal defence has become a popular feature among FPL teams this season, but with one clean sheet in their previous six games, some are starting to at least question the double up. It could be a very difficult decision with upcoming games against Wolves and Leicester in their next three matches. Some may even be lining up a switch out to another Liverpool defender for their double in Gameweek 24.

Crystal Palace continue to impress, and a lot of that is due to their change in fixture difficulty. The Eagles are unbeaten in their previous five matches, but have also caught the eye offensively. That is likely to continue, as they come up against Brentford, Manchester United, Everton, and Fulham in their next four games.

Of the assets impressing is striker and penalty taker Jean Phillipe Mateta (£7.3m). The Frenchman has scored four goals in his last three matches, signalling a huge turn in form recently. Another player who seems to be maintaining consistency is midfielder Eberechi Eze (£6.7m), who has returned in each of his last four games.
