What is the Challenge this week?
The Challenge for Gameweek 22 is ‘Restricted Budget’.
Budget is limited to £25m, so spend accordingly.
Challengers have to select five players.
Top Picks – Goalkeepers
Finding cheap players with potential this week is a priority when taking the frameworks of the Challenge into account. With that in mind, Newcastle and their back-up goalkeeper Martin Dubravka (£4.3m) stand out. The Magpies have been excellent defensively as of late – collecting five clean sheets in their previous six matches. A home match against Bournemouth could again see Dubravka add to their recent success once more.
No team have secured more clean sheets than Nottingham Forest this season. Helping them achieve that is Matz Sels (£5m). This week, Sels clashes with Southampton, who continue to produce poor underlying attacking metrics.
There are several other great goalkeeping option this week. Among them is Crystal Palace’ Dean Henderson (£4.5m) for his away trip to West Ham, Chelsea’ Robert Sanchez (£4.8m) who meets with a poor Wolves side at home, Fulham’ Bernd Leno (£5m) against Leicester away from home, and finally West Ham’ Lukasz Fabianski (£4.1m) against Crystal Palace.
Defenders
Fulham could take priority when it comes to selecting a defender this week. The Cottagers may not be one of the best defensive units in the league, but a clash with Leicester could see them keep a clean sheet. One player who has shown he doesn’t need clean sheets to pick up points this week is Antonee Robinson (£5m). The American international has racked up a huge nine assists already this season.
We could go even cheaper from Fulham. In fact, fellow full-back and Belgian Timothy Castagne comes in £0.8m cheaper at £4.2m. Castagne produced an assist against Chelsea recently, proving he too can pick up attacking returns.
Nottingham Forest’ home game against Southampton screams clean sheet potential, and they have a variety of options for Challengers looking to invest. Of them is centre-back Nikola Milenkovic (£4.8m). He has managed to return in six of his last seven matches. Although less attacking, Murillo (£4.6m) is a slightly cheaper option in the Nottingham Forest backline.
Newcastle’ Lewis Hall (£5m), Crystal Palace’ Alex Munoz (£4.8m), Manchester City’ Rico Lewis for his meet with Ipswich, and West Ham’ Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.6m), could be other fantastic options this week.
Midfielders
There are plenty of attractive midfield options to pick from this week, but if you’re looking for cheap, then look no further than Anthony Elanga (£5.3m). Nottingham Forest face a Southampton side who rank worst in the league for total big chances conceded, and Elanga goes into the game off the back of bagging a goal or an assist in each of his last six matches.
If you can squeeze in the more expensive Morgan Gibbs-White (£6.4m), then he could be another brilliant attacking pick from Nottingham Forest. Gibbs-White is also in top form – with three goals and three assists in his previous six games.
West Ham rank among the worst five teams for total shots in the box conceded and total shots on target conceded. This could be a great opportunity for the Crystal Palace attackers. The cheapest and most effective of the bunch could well be Ismaila Sarr (£5.9m) who registered an assist in his latest game. Eberechi Eze (£6.6m) comes in £0.7m more expensive, but he’s managed a return in each of his last three matches, showing more consistency than his teammate.
Newcastle have been relentless recently – winning their last six matches and racking up a huge 18 goals. Investing in their attack for their home match against the Cherries could be massively rewarding based on that. Anthony Gordon (£7.7m) is the standout, if you can fit him in, after returning in every single one of his last six matches. However, a much cheaper option is Jacob Murphy (£5.1m). Murphy has mustered up two goals and three assists in his previous-six games, showing he too can be a major threat.
Leicester haven’t just lost their last six matches, but they have also shipped a huge 16 goals during that period. Because of this, a Fulham attacker could have potential this week. Of their midfielder options, Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) has impressed the most – hitting a 15-point haul in Gameweek 21.
Options like Chelsea’ Enzo Fernandez (£5m) against a poor Wolves defence, Bournemouth’ Antoine Semenyo (£5.6m) and Manchester City’ Savinho (£6.5m) for his clash with Ipswich, could all offer huge potential.
Forwards
The standout forward in general this week could well be Chris Wood (£6.9m). The Nottingham Forest penalty taker has been exceptional this season. With 13 goals already, Wood heads into his fixture against a poor Southampton defence in fantastic form.
Fulham’ match against Leicester could be too good to ignore this week. The Cottagers also have several cheap options at their disposal. Of them, and leading the attack is Raul Jimenez (£5.7m). The Mexican striker produced three goals in his previous three matches, highlighting his good recent form.
Other options to consider include Brighton’ Joao Pedro (£5.7m) against Manchester United and Leicester’ Jamie Vardy (£5.5m).
@FPLReaction Team Reveal
- This week was about prioritising a captain. Fitting in Chris Wood to take the armband was not an easy task, but to have a good week I think you need a reliable player and he is that. The match against Southampton was also a major consideration.
- I could have selected Anthony Elanga for much cheaper, but I’m not sure he would be a reliable captain at all.
- Dubravka was always a shoo-in between the sticks, due to his price.
- Timothy Castagne and Murillo aren’t glamourous picks, but I think they could both bag a clean sheet this week.
- Fernandez has really impressed for Chelsea recently, and although short of a return in his previous five games, he did return in every one of his five games prior to that.
- If I get cold feet with Chris Wood, or find a cheaper option who can wear the armband, then my team could change.
Gameweek 21 Challenge Review
- Nearly everything went wrong last week. My big success was of course Dubravka, who bagged a huge 20 points.
- Haaland was a huge disappointment, but so was Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Fernandes. I expected more from Salah and Fernandes especially.
- In total I hit just 42 points, which meant a round rank of 110k, which helped my fall down to 1.4k globally.
- Hopefully, it’s a much better round overall this week.
- Good luck!
