What is the Challenge this week?
The Challenge for Gameweek 19 is ‘New Year, New Chance’.
Big chances created are worth five additional points.
Challengers have to select nine players with an unlimited budget.
Top Picks – Goalkeepers
Taking into account that goalkeepers don’t tend to create big chances, it could be worth focusing on clean sheet and save potential alone.
With the above in mind, one of several goalkeepers Challengers could opt for is Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.5m). Bournemouth have managed two clean sheets in their previous two matches, which shows they are capable defensively. This week he faces an Everton side who have scored the second least amount of goals this season.
Nottingham Forest are another side worth investing in from a defensive perspective. In fact, as well as sitting joint first for total clean sheets this season, they also rank the best for total big chances conceded. Wolves lay ahead, who will be without start striker Matheus Cunha due to his suspension. One of several players who can benefit from this is Matz Sels (£4.8m).
There are several other goalkeepers with potential this week, including: Aston Villa’ Emiliano Martinez (£5m) for his home match against Leicester and Fulham’ Bernd Leno (£5m) who faces Ipswich at home.
Defenders
Several defenders rank high for big chances created so far, but edging every other is Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m). His Liverpool side rank joint top for clean sheets so far, which suggests he has potential in his home clash to Manchester United. However with 12 big chances created already this season, the full-back also has huge potential when taking into account the Challenge.
Another player who catches the eye this week is Lucas Digne (£4.6m). Aston Villa play promoted side Leicester this week, which could mean Unai Emery’ men have clean sheet potential. Digne has proven himself as a creative hub for his side too – managing 11 big chances created already.
Their recent win and clean sheet against Chelsea could give Ipswich confidence to perform well against Fulham in the round ahead. Even if the Tractor Boys fail to keep a clean sheet, flying full-back Leif Davis (£4.5m) could haul due to the Challenge. As well as creating more chances than any other defender this season so far, he has also produced 10 big chances.
Challengers could also consider Bournemouth’ Milos Kerkez (£4.7m) against Everton, Fulham’ Antonee Robinson (£4.9m) v Ipswich, and Newcastle’ Lewis Hall (£4.7m).
Midfielders
There can be no looking past Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) this week. The Egyptian has been in fantastic form this season, and he plays against old rivals Manchester United this week. Ruben Amorim’ side have shipped at least two goals in five of their last six games, and Salah has an incredible record against Manchester United historically. Salah isn’t exactly short of big chances created either – having produced 14 already thus far.
Ranking joint third for total assists and second overall for big chances created among midfielders, Cole Palmer (£11.4m) remains a brilliant pick this week. Chelsea will be hoping to bounce back after their recent shock defeat to Ipswich, and penalty taker Palmer could be the one to enforce that against a ropey Crystal Palace defence.
A lot of the leading midfielders for big chances produced, are either injured or have rough fixtures this week, including Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Tottenham’ Son Heung-Min and Arsenal’ Bukayo Saka. For that reason it could be worth looking at overall potential.
For overall potential there are several other options we could consider. One of them is Brentford penalty Bryan Mbeumo (£7.6m), who is the third highest scoring player in his position. Mbeumo has huge potential against a very poor Southampton side next.
Manchester City duo Kevin De Bruyne (£9.4m) and Phil Foden (£9.2m) play West Ham this week, whilst Fulham’ Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) faces Ipswich and Bournemouth’ Antoine Semenyo (£5.6m) plays Ipswich. All four could be interesting options too.
Forwards
The only striker who has produced more big chances than Alexander Isak (£9.2m) this season is Wolves man Matheus Cunha, who is suspended this week. Newcastle have been in fine scoring form recently, and they face Tottenham away from home next. Isak can’t stop scoring at the moment – netting in each of his last six matches on the bounce.
The only other player to produce more than four big chances this season is Fulham’ Raul Jimenez (£5.5m). Scoring in his previous match, the Mexican seems ready for a clash against a poor Ipswich defence next up.
When it comes to overall potential, Ollie Watkins (£8.8m) stands out. He faces Leicester at home this week, the Foxes rank joint worst for total goals conceded this season. Watkins has a fantastic opportunity to add to the goal and assist he bagged in the previous round.
There are plenty of other striker options. Some of which include Chelsea’ Nicolas Jackson (£8.3m), Manchester City’ Erling Haaland (£14.8m), Brentford’ Yoane Wissa (£6.2m) and Nottingham Forest’ Chris Wood (£6.7m).
@FPLReaction Team Reveal
- I feel very happy with my draft heading into this week.
- I like Arrizabalaga against Everton, but I’m still considering Martinez.
- There are lots of defensive options this week. I’m set on Alexander-Arnold and Digne (if Digne starts). Davis is a chance creating machine, so could stay.
- Salah will almost certainly be my captain, Palmer and Mbeumo are also essentials for me this week.
- It’s difficult to look past either Watkins or Isak.
Gameweek 19 Challenge Review
- Last week was mixed overall. Blanks from both Henderson and Pickford were unexpected.
- Palmer, Solanke and Mateta also blanked, which was disappointing.
- Salah went nuclear with the captaincy which wasn’t a surprise. Isak also scored, which I think a lot of people expected.
- Jackson was in my original side. However, he didn’t start the game for Chelsea, so the only other viable option was Watkins who did well. It would have been an 11-point swing if I wasn’t active upon line-ups release.
- Overall I hit up 68 points, which gave me a round rank of 24k. This week was a green arrow all of the way up to 1.1k, so I’m close to breaking into the top 1k.
- Good luck this week!
