What is the Challenge this week?
The Challenge for Gameweek 12 is ‘Economise’.
Challengers have to select seven players with a budget of just £45m.
Top Picks – Goalkeepers
Goalkeepers offer much less potential that other positions, so it could be wise to spend as little as possible on one this week, especially with the limited budget.
Sustaining the best defence in the league so far is Liverpool. The Reds have racked up the most clean sheets so far and they come up against the worst side in the league next, Southampton.
For the more engaged Challengers, it could be worth checking the line-ups to see if Caoimhin Kelleher (£4.5m) is starting ahead of Alisson. If that is the case then the former could be the standout goalkeeper option this week.
For those that don’t want to wait around for line-ups then there are plenty of options to choose from. One of them is Chelsea’ Robert Sanchez (4.7m), who could have both save point and clean sheet potential against newly promoted Leicester this week.
Other good alternatives between the sticks include Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez (£5m) against an inconsistent Crystal Palace side, Brentford’s Mark Flekken (£4.5m) as he clashes with a Everton side who have failed to score in their previous two matches, and Brighton’s Bart Verbuggen (£4.5m) for his game against Bournemouth.
Defenders
Lucas Digne (£4.7m) could catch the eye this week. Aston Villa have a plum fixture against an inconsistent Crystal Palace side this week, which could mean clean sheet potential. The French full-back also offers attacking threat. In fact, Digne goes into the match having produced five assists for club and country this season.
A home game for Newcastle could also offer potential. The Magpies clash with West Ham this week, which could give the cheap Lewis Hall (£4.4m) an opportunity to impress. Hall has managed three returns in his last five league matches, thanks to two clean sheets and one assist.
Ranking better than any other side in the league so far for big chances conceded, Fulham will be another interesting proposition. The Cottagers come up against Wolves at home, so full-back Antonee Robinson (£4.7m) could continue to impress. He goes into the meeting off the back of banking a return in two back-to-back matches.
There are plenty of other good options to choose from. Amongst those options is Arsenal’s Gabriel (£6.1m), who offers huge attacking threat heading into his home match against Nottingham Forest. Other picks include Brighton’s Pervis Estupinan (£5m) against Bournemouth, Chelsea’s Reece James (£4.9m) and Levi Colwill (£4.5m), as they face-off with Leicester, and Wolves full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.7m).
Midfielders
It’s going to be very difficult to bring in a lot of the most appealing attackers this week. So, prioritising one, could be the best move, especially when considering captaincy. With that in mind many will look to Liverpool penalty taker Mohamed Salah (£12.9m).
Salah has been absolutely relentless this season – banking a huge seven double-digit hauls in his first 11 matches. Those that want to target a woeful Southampton, but don’t want to spend as much cash, then teammate Luis Diaz (£7.7m) is a much cheaper route into the Liverpool attack.
The fixture between Leicester and Chelsea is another match full of potential. The latter go into the tie, ranking amongst the top four sides for goals scored thus far. A considerable amount of those goals were produced by talisman and penalty taker Cole Palmer (£10.9m).
Palmer may be difficult to squeeze on, considering the current budget, so Pedro Neto (£6.2m) may be the next best option. Neto seems to be gaining the trust of Enzo Maresca, and with that trust he has managed to score and assist in his last three games.
Two back-to-back double-digit hauls also makes Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes (£8.4m) a good option. Much more affordable than other midfield picks, Fernandes will hope to punish an Ipswich side who rank the worst in the league for total big chances conceded.
Brentford have scored the joint second most goals this season so far, which makes their talisman Bryan Mbeumo (£7.9m) a great selection. The penalty taker has produced an impressive eight goals and one assist in just 11 league matches.
Cheaper midfield picks could be crucial this week and there are several to choose from. Fulham’s home match against a poor Wolves defence could mean potential for the in-form Emile Smith Rowe (£5.8m). Also playing at home, and in form, is Morgan Rogers (£5.4m). Aston Villa have a meeting with an inconsistent Crystal Palace this week, which could suggest plenty of potential for him.
Forwards
Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table is reflective of their excellent form this season. That same form doesn’t seem likely to change this week as the Reds clash with rock bottom Southampton next. Leading the frontline could be Darwin Nunez (£7.1m). Nunez has bagged a return in two of his last three games, which indicates he has form at his side.
Another player facing a poor newly promoted side is Nicolas Jackson (£7.9m). The Chelsea forward has produced just three less goal contributions than main man Cole Palmer this season, suggesting he too is in fine form this season.
Newcastle play at home this week, which is a venue they tend to perform significantly better at. In addition to this, their opposition, West Ham, have shipped 3-4 goals in two of their last four games. With this in mind, penalty taker Alexander Isak (£8.5m) could make it four goals in four games this week.
Ranking second amongst all forwards for big chances total this season, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins (£9m), should also be a consideration. Like Newcastle, Aston Villa also have more success at home, if that happens then Watkins will likely be amongst the goals.
Cheaper options with potential in Gameweek 12 includes Brentford’s Yoane Wissa (£6.1m) against Everton, Brighton’s Danny Welbeck (£6m) for his match against Bournemouth, and Raul Jimenez (£5.8m) against Wolves.
@FPLReaction Team Reveal
- I’m quite comfortable with the entry above.
- A chunk of my budget goes to Mohamed Salah who I think, is by far, the best captaincy option this week. His position in my team dictates a lot. If I feel his minutes may be managed, then I may reshuffle my team, bring in Cole Palmer, captain him, and make upgrades elsewhere.
- I think Gabriel and Hall are great options in defence. If I make the move above with Salah and Palmer, I may downgrade Gabriel to Lucas Digne to release more funds. This would even allow me to bring in Alexander Isak.
- However, I really like both Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers this week. They are nice and cheap, and have great fixtures.
- If I don’t go for Palmer, and decide to stick with Salah, which is likely, then Pedro Neto will stay. I think he is an excellent option for the Leicester match, and a much cheaper route into the attack than Palmer.
Gameweek 11 Challenge Review
- I had a very strong Gameweek 11 Challenge round. I managed to hit 68 points, and that meant a round rank of 22k.
- The above rocketed me up to a world ranking of 13k. If you can remember, I was keen on breaching the top 20k this week, so this was a huge win.
- Onana picking up nine points felt like a big win, considering I was keen on him to straight off the bat last week.
- Ait Nouri and Solanke were underwhelming, but Haaland and Salah came in with great scorers.
- Hopefully, I can continue this form into the new round.
