FPL Challenge Gameweek 10 is here. With exciting new badges to earn and prizes to win FPL Challenge have made some massive changes. With that in mind our tips and team reveal could be exactly what you need to have success.
What is the Challenge this week?
The Challenge for Gameweek 9 is ‘Foul Play’.
Challengers will receive two points for each foul won but minus one point for fouls conceded.
Challengers can also do the above with an unlimited budget.
Top Picks – Goalkeepers
Fouls won is a major part of the Challenge this week, but it’s a metric that rarely affects goalkeepers. So, in that case, it could be worth focusing on clean sheet and save potential instead.
With the above in mind, one option we could consider is Jordan Pickford (£4.8m). Everton face the joint worst side in the league this week for goals scored this week in Southampton, and two clean sheets in his previous three matches suggests Pickford goes into the game in good form.
Most of the fixtures could be tightly contested this week so it could be worth backing good defensive sides. One of those teams is Liverpool, who have kept the most clean sheets this season so far. Hoping to keep a clean sheet for them at Anfield this week is Caoimhin Kelleher (£4.4m).
Challengers could also back: Manchester City’s Ederson (£5.5m) against Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest’ Matz Sels (£4.5m) versus West Ham or Arsenal’s David Raya (£5.7m) against Newcastle.
Defenders
Awkwardly, standout defenders from a fouls won perspective have awkward fixtures this week. The fact they receive minus one point for every foul conceded also makes picking them difficult.
Because of the above it could be more beneficial to pick the best options from a clean sheet and attacking view. Based on that, Ipswich full-back Leif Davis (£4.5m) could be a very good option. Davis dominates his position for distribution metrics including total crosses, total chances and total big chances created. Davis also goes into his home game against Leicester off the back of registering an assist in his previous match.
One player who sits second best amongst defenders for tackles won is Antonee Robinson (£4.7m). The American has averaged around four per match this season, which could provide an additional four points. He clashes with Brentford next which could be tricky, but Robinson has created the joint second most assists in his position this season, so he evidently has attacking threat.
Another asset who could offer multiple routes to points this week is Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m). The second highest scoring defender in the game ranks inside the top two amongst defenders for all distribution metrics.
There are plenty of other options to pick from this week. As well as the above Challengers could also consider: Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.5m) against Crystal Palace, Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol (£6.1m) and Rico Lewis (£4.7m) v Bournemouth, and Tottenham’s Pedro Porro (£5.5m) who clashes with Aston Villa.
Midfielders
The issue with a lot of the best midfielders for fouls won is that they also majorly lack for attacking threat. So again, it could be wise to select midfielders who have attacking potential.
Southampton remain a top team to target from a defensive perspective. The Saints have shipped three goals in three of their last four matches. So, to take advantage of their shortcomings at the back Challengers should look to Dwight McNeil (£5.8m). McNeil sits in the top three midfielders for both chances created and big chances created and banked three returns in his previous four games.
Another standout option in Gameweek 10 is Mohamed Salah (£12.7m). The 32-year-old has been in excellent form this season – scoring six goals and creating five assists in just nine league games. Brighton, his upcoming opposition, have done little defensively this season to suggest he can’t continue his run.
Taking into account the fact he has scored eight goals in just nine matches, it could be difficult to leave out Bryan Mbeumo (£7.7m) in the midfielders conversation. Brentford face a leaky Fulham defence this week which suggests we may see more of the same form from Brentford’s main man.
There is an abundance of good midfield options this week, here are more you should consider:
- Eberechi Eze (£6.7m) v Wolves
- Emile Smith Rowe (£5.7m) v Brentford
- Phil Foden (£9.3m) v Bournemouth
- Cole Palmer (£10.9m) v Manchester United
- Bukayo Saka (£10m) v Newcastle.
Forwards
There is no beating around the bush this week. Without budget limitations, the standout forward going into the new round is without a doubt Erling Haaland (£15.4m). The Norwegian spearheads the best attack in the league and a meeting with Bournemouth is a fantastic fixture to bounce back from his recent dry patch.
No side in the division have conceded more shots on target this season than Brentford. Fulham play at home which could be good factor when considering their odds of scoring and leading the attack is Raul Jimenez (£5.7m). Prior to his blank in Gameweek 9 the Mexican managed five returns on the bounce.
Tottenham’s inconsistency in defence could suggest Ollie Watkins (£9.1m) may have potential this week. The only defender who has mustered up more big chances than the Aston Villa talisman is Erling Haaland, which reinforces how attacking he is.
Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£9m) against Southampton, Nottingham Forest’s Chris Wood (£6.4m) v West Ham, Wolves’ Matheus Cunha (£6.5m) against Crystal Palace and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa (£5.9m) v Fulham could also have potential this week.
@FPLReaction Team Reveal
- I’m not convinced the Challenge is that rewarding this week. In fact, I would go as far as saying it could be a trap. If they were rewarding points for fouls alone then I could have been swayed, but that isn’t the case.
- With the above in mind, I have gone for, what some may call a template team in FPL. I have simply picked players who I think could do well this week.
- I’m still tempted by Leif Davis, a player who has been in most of my Challenge entries over the previous games.
- Captaincy is currently on Erling Haaland, but I may also be tempted by Mohamed Salah.
- I’m already looking forward to next weeks Challenge, good luck!
Gameweek 9 Challenge Review
- Last week I fully emersed myself into the framework of the Challenge. Ultimately, I was punished for it after popular assets like Salah, Palmer, Saka all returned.
- In fact, my Round rank was around 200k, which meant I dropped to an overall rank of 23.4k, which is fine.
- Leif Davis was my best performing asset, even after conceding four goals and picking up a yellow card.
- My captain Porro did ok but no clean sheet or attacking return meant I didn’t have much success.
