What is the Challenge for Gameweek 7?

Top Picks

Goalkeepers

The standout fixture from a clean sheet perspective appears to be Arsenal v West Ham. Arsenal have been fantastic from a defensive perspective – ranking top for total shots and big chances conceded. Between the sticks for them is David Raya who could well keep his fourth Premier League clean sheet of the season this week.

No side have produced less expected goals (XG) than Burnley this season. The newly promoted side have struggled to convince, which offers potential for Aston Villa who play host this week. With that in mind, another goalkeeper we could look to is Emiliano Martinez.

Newcastle have started better than any other side in regards to total clean sheets (four). The Magpies head into the new round off the back of banking one against Bournemouth. Nottingham Forest lay ahead, and although under new management, they are yet to convince offensively. This presents an opportunity for Nick Pope.

Other goalkeepers Challengers could consider this week include Bournemouth’ Djorde Petrovic versus Fulham, Everton’ Jordan Pickford up against Crystal Palace, and Manchester City’ Gianluigi Donnarumma for his meeting with Brentford.

Defenders

FPL Challenge Best Picks and Team Reveal - Gameweek 7

One defender shines more than any other this week, Gabriel. The Arsenal centre-back doesn’t just have a an opening to keep a clean sheet against and out of form West Ham, but he also has attacking threat. This was on display in the previous round in which he scored.

Another defender could catch the eye this week. Bournemouth are one of six sides to have produced three clean sheets during their first six matches. This week could see them add a fourth against Fulham, and Marcos Senesi, who ranks above every other defender for total defensive contributions so far, could be key to that.

Aston Villa rank second among all teams in regards to clean sheet odds this week. They host newly promoted Burnley, which should catch the eye of Challengers. One of their safest options, and arguably their most attacking, is full-back Lucas Digne who bagged an assist in Gameweek 6.

Alternative options include Everton’ James Tarkowski v Crystal Palace, Newcastle’ Kieran Trippier versus Nottingham Forest, and Manchester City’ Ruben Dias for his match against Brentford.

Midfielders

Although doubled, clean sheet potential for midfielders should not be the focus for Challengers. Picking out the attackers most likely to score and assist remain top priority. With that in mind, Fulham’ leaky backline and the fact he has produced four goals and two assists already, Bournemouth’ Antoine Semenyo could be a popular pick this week.

Being limited to just one pick per team really limits Bukayo Saka’ appeal this week. So, looking to a team like Manchester City could be a wise move. Brentford rank among the four worst teams in the league for total goals conceded, so Challengers could consider the likes of Jeremy Doku and Phil Foden.

Whilst Aston Villa have seriously lacked offensively this season, their recent 3-1 win against Fulham could see a turn in form. If that does happen this week against a ropey Burnley defence, then Morgan Rogers could well be involved.

There are several viable midfield options this week. Among them is Tottenham’ Mohammed Kudus who faces Leeds, Liverpool’ Mohamed Salah versus a vulnerable Chelsea backline, and Newcastle’ Anthony Gordon up against Nottingham Forest.

Considering how poor Brentford have been defensively this season, backing against Erling Haaland could be foolish. The Manchester City penalty taker has been relentless since the start of the season – hitting eight goals and one assist in just six Premier League matches.

Partly to blame for Aston Villa’ poor attacking start to the campaign was Ollie Watkins. However, a cool, calm and collected finish against Fulham in Gameweek 6 suggests his confidence is yet to be fully knocked by that. Burnley ahead offers him another opportunity to get among the goals.

Challengers could also consider Arsenal’ Viktor Gyokeres v West Ham and Brighton’ Danny Welbeck up against a leaky Wolves defence.

Team Reveal

  • Clean sheets are priority this week, so it makes sense to captain Gabriel, who also has attacking threat.
  • I also think Martinez, Trippier and Tarkowski are the best picks from their respective clubs.
  • I was tempted by Senesi, and still am. However, I think Semenyo is the best midfield option this week.
  • Similar could be said with Haaland. I think he is by far the best of the bunch in attack.
  • Defence is the only thing likely to change in this team.

Gameweek 6 Review

FPL Challenge Best Picks and Team Reveal - Gameweek 7
  • I thought last week went fairly well – with 69 points and a round rank of 34k. This meant a global rank of 1.8k.
  • I was happy with Roefs and captaincy. Xavi and Calafiori were my biggest let downs.
  • Overall it was a solid round though. I nearly captained Xavi so that would have been disastrous.
  • Good luck this week!
