Erling Haaland
Manchester City have been below their usual standard recently. The league holders have won just one of their last five matches in all competitions this seasons. We should however take into account that they faced Aston Villa, Tottenham, Leipzig, Liverpool and Chelsea in the same period. In terms of attacking data in the same period they still rank the best for expected goals, the best for actual goals scored, joint first for big chances and joint second best for shots on target.
Newly promoted side Luton lay ahead for Manchester City which could be a massive opportunity to get back to their best. Luton have improved some parts of their game recently but have still lost three of their last five matches. In their last six matches Luton also sit the worst in the league for expected goals conceded, third for actual goals conceded, the worst for shots in the box conceded and the worst for big chances conceded.
The fixture ahead looks like a good one for Erling Haaland (£14m). The Norwegian has had a great start to the campaign scoring 14 goals and four assists in just 14 matches. Five goals and three assists of that total have come in his last six matches. When it comes to the data Haaland ranks the best amongst all players for non-penalty expected goal involvement, top for goals scored, first for shots in the box and first for big chances total.
Taking the above into account Erling Haaland is way ahead of any other options for captaincy this week. He faces the worst team in the league in terms of recent underlying defensive data, plays for a team leading every other for key attacking metrics and is topping the underlying offensive data when compared to every other player.
An Alternative Option
The second best captaincy option this week could well be Mohamed Salah (£13.1m). Liverpool are in strong scoring form recently – scoring a huge 14 goals in the last six league matches. Offensively they also rank first for total attempts on goal, second best for big chances total and the best for shots on target.
Liverpool have a match against Crystal Palace next who have been poor recently. The Eagles have lost three of their last four league matches and conceded at least two goals in three of them.
If it wasn’t for the fact Manchester City are facing Luton this week Mohamed Salah could have potentially edged Haaland for the armband. The Egyptian has blanked just three times this season in 15 matches played and remains the highest scoring player in the game so far.
