Fantasy EFL Top Picks for Gameweek 1

In this article we take a look at the Fantasy EFL top picks for Gameweek 1. We bring in our expert and regular Fantasy EFL contributor @FPLEdgeworth to reveal his two teams and two of the best picks in each position for first round.

Our Fantasy EFL Fantasy top picks for Gameweek 1 can be hugely beneficial for fantasy managers. Knowing who the best players to own in each position and top two teams to target are could help you beat your mini-league rivals and secure a good rank.

Goalkeepers – Seny Dieng – Middlesbrough FC

Dieng has Swansea at home in the first game of the season. In recent history they have kept a clean sheet in two out of three of the last fixtures that Middlesbrough have played at home. With four out of six clean sheets in pre-season, it’s all pointing in the direction of another clean sheet.

Angus Gunn – Norwich City

Gunn has newly promoted Oxford United away in the first game of the campaign. With both sides having mediocre pre-seasons, I think Norwich will win and, more importantly, keep a clean sheet to begin their charge to better last seasons play-off disappointment.

Defenders – Junior Firpo – Leeds United

Firpo faces newly promoted Portsmouth at home this week which is a great opportunity for him. After bagging the most clean sheets last season, I think Leeds will start the new season with one. Also, with Firpo already scoring a goal in pre-season, along with seven assists in 19 games last season, a clean sheet and an attacking return could both be on the cards.

James Maxwell – Doncaster Rovers

Maxwell has Accrington Stanley at home in their first game of the season. Interestingly last season Doncaster kept two clean sheets against Accrington. With Doncaster improving and Accrington in decline, a clean sheet is almost certain in the most one-sided opening day League Two fixture.

Midfielders – Jordan Gibson – Doncaster Rovers

I have opted for another Doncaster player. As mentioned they have Accrington at home in the first game of the season. Pre-season has been good for Gibson – scoring three goals in five games. So on this form, you would expect a return or two this week.

Daniel Crowley

Crowley has Tranmere away in the first game of the season, so against a mediocre side, last season’s highest League Two goal scorer could have big potential. Crowley is a very influential figure in the attack so will most definitely be in the goals.

Forwards – Alfie May – Birmingham City

May faces a transfer-banned Reading at home in the first game of the season, and with so much expectation, I think Birmingham will dispatch Reading. Last season’s League One top goal scorer, Alfie May, should be amongst the goals against Reading. May goes into the season after scoring five goals in four pre-season matches.

Georginio Rutter – Leeds United

Rutter, the second Leeds player to feature on this list faces a newly promoted defence in the opening round. Rutter produced two goals and three assists in four pre-season games so he will be looking to take that scintillating form into the game against Portsmouth to prove he is a viable replacement for Summerville.

Teams to Target

1. Sheffield United play away at Preston in their first game of the season in the Championship. History at Preston shows two clean sheets in the last three games for Sheffield United but this time they visit with a stronger team than in previous years.

2. Blackpool FC face Crawley in their first game of the season, and with Crawley destined for nothing but relegation, Blackpool should breeze to a win after just missing out on the playoffs last season. With extra points for away games, this is a no brainer.
