EURO 2024 Fantasy Spain Top Picks

In this article we take a look at the EURO 2024 Fantasy Spain top picks. Here we touch upon the recent form of Spain, how they achieved qualification, highlight their best picks, and anything else of relevance.

Our EURO 2024 Fantasy Spain top picks could be crucial for managers. Knowing how a team has been performing recently can be helpful. But, knowing who the best picks from each team can be essential for the tournament ahead.

The 2022 World Cup was a mixed bag for Spain. After winning one, drawing one and losing in a Group with Japan, Germany and Costa Rica they secured a second-place finish.

The campaign ended in disappointment however after losing the following round of 16 match against a stubborn Morocco who edged them in a penalty shootout.

Their highlight of that tournament was of course their mammoth win against Costa Rica which saw them win 7-0.

Before and after the World Cup Spain were having success elsewhere. Winning three, drawing two and losing one Spain topped their Nations League Group and advanced to the latter stages. Beating both Italy and Croatia in the semi-finals and final to win the Nations League was a huge achievement for both the team and new coach Luis De La Fuente.

That same growth and form continued into their EURO Qualifiers where they won a huge seven of their eight matches, losing just once. They also managed 25 goals scored, an average of 3.1 goals scored per game, just five goals conceded, and four clean sheets.

Spain have played since, drawing to Brazil 3-3 and losing to Colombia 1-0 in their latest friendlies. For their loss Spain experimented with multiple changes from their ‘best XI’ which clearly had a negative effect on their performance.

Fixtures

Spain begin their campaign with a repeat of their Nations League final against Croatia. Croatia recently secured a runners-up medal in the Nations League and prior to that third place in the 20222 World Cup.

They then go onto a clash against Italy who scraped qualification in the Group Stage after edging third place Ukraine due to their head-to-head record. They did however have an impressive Nations League campaign where they claimed a third place medal.

Spain finish their Group Stage journey against an Albania side who have failed to win since their friendly against Bulgaria in 2023. Prior to that they edged Czech Republic in Qualifying to secure first place due to a superior head-to-head record.

Top Picks

For managers looking to invest in a Spain defensive asset then it could wise to avoid the likes of goalkeeper Unai Simon and right-back Dani Carvajal. This is mainly because both come in with a €5.5m price-tag, which is 0.5m more than the two standout options we will mention here.

There are some question marks over some of the Spanish defenders minutes but centre-back Aymeric Laporte (€5m) is seemingly nailed. The former Manchester City man started five of the EURO qualifiers, there he averaged a ball recovery rate of 6.0 per match.

For Saudi club Al-Nassr Laporte produced four goals and one assist, along with a ball recovery rate of 5.1 per game.

As well as some goal threat, reliable gametime and clean sheet potential, owners are also highly likely to pick up plenty of ball recovery points from Laporte.

Alejandro Grimaldo

The recent injury to Valencia left-back Jose Luis Gaya has cleared some fog surrounding the debate around who will start for Spain. Marc Cucurella and Alejandro Grimaldo (€5m) are two options that could fill the left-back slot, with recent performances supporting the latter.

Grimaldo has enjoyed an excellent first season at German club Bayer Leverkusen. The German League Champions claimed the Bundesliga title after going unbeaten all season and Grimaldo’ exceptional 10 goals and 13 assists from wing-back helped them achieve that.

Grimaldo has more than enough experience at left-back to adapt to the formation change. At former club Benfica he thrived both domestically and in Europe, managing five goals and nine assists in his 22/23 Liga Portugal campaign and two goals and four assists in his 22/23 Champions League run.

If we see Grimaldo dominate the left-back position in the upcoming friendlies against Andorra and Northern Ireland, he could well become one of the most sought after defenders in the game.

Rodri

Rotation in the Spain frontline is hugely off-putting as a EURO Fantasy manager but one player who will play 90 minutes every match is Rodri (€6.5m). The Manchester City midfielder has been one of the most successful in Europe in terms of silverware and his performances have naturally secured him as the best in the world in his position.

Although a central midfielder Rodri has shown enough output at club to warrant some excitement. In fact as well as amassing an impressive eight goals and nine assists in the Premier League last season he also sustained an average of 6.9 ball recoveries per match.

As well as having a huge appetite for launching attempts on goal from outside the box, Rodri also took and converted Spain’ most recent penalty kick which suggests he could continue on penalty duty. With all of the above in mind Rodri is an easy addition into the EURO 2024 Fantasy Spain top picks.

One to Watch – Álvaro Morata

As well as keeping tabs on midfielder Nico Williams (€7m) and in-game forward Lamin Yamal (€6.5m) it could be worth monitoring Álvaro Morata (€8.5m) even more closely.

Morata had a very impressive season at club Atletico in 23/24, scoring 15 goals and creating three assists in 32 La Liga matches. That same form transferred over to his Champions League campaign, there he claimed five goals and one assist in 10 matches.

He hasn’t just impressed at club level though, Morata is very much an international player and we can see that reflected in the three goals and one assist he managed in the recent 2022 World Cup. He then followed that up with four goals in his six EURO Qualifiers.
