England v USA match report

The World Cup continues. Our second match in Group B Matchday 2 begins. We take a look at the England v USA match. We will highlight the line-ups, pick out the key moments and standout World Cup Fantasy performances during the match.

Covering the England v USA match can be very useful to World Cup Fantasy managers. Highlighting line-ups, key moments and standout fantasy performances can aid decisions regarding future transfers, captaincies and chip strategy.

Line-ups – England

After rumours that striker Harry Kane (£11m) may not start the match, he starts. Bukayo Saka (£8m) also starts the game. The midfielder scored two goals in Matchday 1, making him the highest scoring player in World Cup Fantasy.

USA

Many managers within the community will be hoping goalkeeper Matt Turner (£4.5m) keeps his first clean sheet of the World Cup. Some managers who chose midfielder Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) could have decided to sell ahead of a tough match against England.

Key moments

  • England’s Harry Kane gets his first chance of the game. Bukayo Saka plays a great ball into the box, but Kane’s shot is blocked.
  • Forward Tim Weah (£6.5m) places a ball to Weston Mckennie (£6m) in a dangerous position but his shot goes way over the bar.
  • Yunus Musah (£6m) hits a shot straight at the goalkeeper, but the Americans are growing into the game.
  • Christian Pulisic finds himself in a fantastic position to shoot. The midfielders strike smashes against the England crossbar. USA are becoming increasingly dangerous.
  • USA defender Sergiño Dest (£5m) cuts into the England box at pace, takes a shot, but is deflected for a corner. The corner comes to nothing.
  • England left back Luke Shaw (£5m) forces his way into the USA box but his intended pass to Bukayo Saka fails to meet its destination.
  • England forward Raheem Sterling (£8.5m) slips the ball to midfielder Mason Mount (£7.5m) who draws a great save from goalkeeper Matt Turner (£4.5m).
  • The first half ends 0-0.
  • The second half gets underway with no changes to personnel.
  • Christian Pulisic drives forward, takes a shot but the shot deflects wide for a corner. USA have started the second half as well as they played in the first.
  • USA have a succession of corners and have penned England into their own half.
  • Raheem Sterling and midfielder Jude Bellingham (£7.5m) are replaced by midfielders Jordan Henderson (£6.5m) and Jack Grealish (£7.5m).
  • Luke Shaw sends the ball into the box from a free kick, it’s a great chance to score but Harry Kane hit it well over the bar.
  • The game ends 0-0.

Standout World Cup Fantasy performances

  • The game finished 0-0, which meant there were plenty of defensive returns but no offensive returns.
  • The biggest returner was Matt Turner. His clean sheet and save point meant he hit seven points.
  • The USA and England defence had plenty of six-point returns. Some of those included Kiran Trippier (£5m), Luke Shaw and Sergiño Dest.

@FPLReaction’s (Louis) comments

The USA played much better than I thought they would. The Americans changed tactic since Matchday 1 and conserved their energy throughout the game. This helped them snuff out the very disappointing England attack.

Both teams have great fixtures next so it could be a case of holding all of their assets we owned for this match in the next match.
